1.5TD first start
« on: January 14, 2008, 02:45:38 pm »
Well, it runs.  I primed the bejeepers out of it with a primer bulb.  Fired on the second try, ran on the third:

Good idle, ran it at a few different RPM.  But I've got some electrical issues to fix.  Took Libbybapa's advice and ran the lower breather.  Thats one of the Last of Davf's 2.5" mild steel down pipes.  2.5" all the way to the rear bumper.

The blow off valve and waste gate are disabled.  LDA pin is were ever the Bosch rebuild shop put it.  I'll hook up the EGT probe and booste guage after I chase out the electrical gremlins so I can get some base data befor change anything.

Here it is, patiently waiteing till next week end.  Moved to its current parking spot under its own power.  Put it in 2nd and poped the clutch to spin the wheels.  Not to bad for a free bee basket case.

This can't be stock. Did VW make a 1.5 TD? That one looks like an 81-84'
1986 Golf WVO converted.

Its an '84 that the original owner purchased with an extended warrentee.  The original owner ran it past 100K miles and threw a timing belt.

The dealer honored the extended warrentee by installing a 1.5 motor with the original 1.6 pump.  The car ran like crap, but the original owner ran it any way, putting around at minimal power settings untill the ring lands filled with carbon and pushed the rings out to the point that they wore out.

He sold it to a gentleman who 'always wanted to work on a diesel'.  He took the guts out of the motor in his back yard.  He then gave up on it but mowed the grass around it, got grass clippings all over the bear block.

The body was in good shape, so I asked him if he wanted to sell it.  He said he'd think about it.  A week later his wife blew a gasket, and demanded he get rid of it instantly.  I got it for nothing.

I always wondered what a 1.5 would do if it was turboed.  So I rebuilt the motor that came with the car: new rings, bearings, valve guides, valves (turbo valves in the exhaust holes), Raceware 11mm head studs, rebuilt a K24 turbo, turbo plumbing, Passenger Performance Dave's 2.5" mild steel down pipe,  2.5" exhauste with a Cherry Bomb glass pack, Spruce thermocouple pre turbo, Booste gauge, dropped a screw into the blow off valve, and filled the banjo bolt on the waste gate line with RTV.

The 1.5TD language came from a Bosch rebuid shop in Chicago.  They were confused when they recieved the 1.5 yellow dot pump with the LDA on it that I built.  They contacted Bosch in Germany and asked what to do.  Bosch Germany gave them 1.5TD specs to set the pump up.

The rest is history

VW did make a 1.5 TD engine. I have pictures of it somewhere. I don't think it made it to mass production though.

That's a very snazzy looking car, I'd love some videos

Oh, and it has: all new wheel bearings on all for corners, new breaks (including wheel cylinders, drum, GTI rotors, and calipers), new CV joints and all new shift linkages.  I chose an early FN tranny from a Scirocco for the tall fifth.  I suspect it will need shocks on all four corners too, but I want to take it out and lightly thrash it to see what it will do first.

Where'd you tap from for an oil supply line for the turbo? I'm working on ECO-ing a 1.5 in the Dasher, and that's a question that's kept popping up in my mind.

I used all of the stuff from a TD motor, so my oilfilter mount is the TD one with the right holes for the turbo supply line and the pressure switch.

Guess that would be the easiest solution, eh? Durr, never even thought of that.

i think u could also use a mk3 oil filter flange it has more outlets on top then you could just have a machine shop make up a piecce of hydraulic hose with the right fitting at each end

Nope, the bolt holes don't line up to attach it to the block
