1.6td confusion! what have i got?
« on: December 10, 2007, 05:12:04 pm »
Hi, Im new here. After reading alot of threads i decided i needed to ask some questions as i am a little confused about some things.  :D

As my first car (im 17) i was given a 1990 VW Golf Mk2 1.6td, with GTI front grill :P , after fitting a new headgasket i was off. i LOVE it.

My problem is that i am not enitirely sure whether i have the ecodiesel or not. (Im still learning, sorry if this is a stupid question.)
After reading alot of information on this subject i have completely confused myself.
It appears to me that i have the ecodiesel IP as it does not have the LDA thing on the top of it. As of yet i do not know what turbo is fitted, how would i go about identifying this? The label on the engine just says Turbo Diesel (ill get a picture)

Once i have clarified this i would like to start modding but im not sure what mods to do.

Sorry for the long post its just i want to clarify this before i go ahead modifying.

I will get some pictures up if anyone is interested. I think thats all for now.

Thanks and sorry again for the long post.

Chris

An ecodiesel does not have the LDA. The LDA adds more fuel as boost increases. Less fuel=less emissions=more ecological=ecodiesel

Without the LDA you still have a TD, it just doesn't have the same fueling capabilities as a TD with an LDA.

I've heard that they did in '92.  I haven't been able to actually find one in person yet though.  :?

Thanks for all the replys much appreciated

Libbybapa : I beleive that the GTI (4 lights) front grill was added by the previous owner or maybe someone before that.
And thanks for the info on codes i will have a look. But then again is it worth it if the Eco was US specific which is something i did wonder and seeing as im in the UK its not likely to be a Eco?

So if i dont have the LDA is it worth getting a pump with one? or can the LDA be fitted to the Eco pump?

Another thing i thought is that didnt the Eco have two fans or something?
mine only has one, so maybe the Eco pump was added as a replacement?

VaagonTurbo : isnt the GTD the one with the Intercooler? mine deffinately doesnt have an intercooler. Yet!!

yes, the GTD came with an intercooler. the main reason for this controversy is the fact that VW never sent the TD Golfs to North America. so although you may have one in Sussex and its stock, we cant find those here. :(

That looks like a stock NA pump. Slap an LDA off a TD pump and yer set.

Eco details:

I own a 1992 Ecodiesel that was stock when purchased two years ago.

It has an N/A-type pump and a k14 turbocharger. The small turbocharger was to help clean up emissions so it could run a catalytic converter.

There is no intercooler.

A 1992 has a dual, two-speed radiator fan that's run off of one motor and a belt drive. The radiator thermal switch that controls the fan has two temperature thresholds.

The stock "aero" grille has two rectangular head lamps.

The sticker on the engine valve cover says "turbodiesel" and is a metallic gold color, not orange like regular TDs with the LDA pump.

Other than the pump,  the Eco engine is a true TD (better head material and oil squirters under the pistons, for example). Get a TD pump with an LDA and you should be ready to go. Be sure to install a boost controller because that little turbo can make over 20 psi boost. The engine can take it, but the turbo is outside it's sweet spot. Keep boost about 15 psi max and you'll be fine. Stock is about 11 psi.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info.

So it is possible to put the LDA on that pump then? if i could find one.
Complete pumps are pricey though right?

Not that it matters now though, its gunna be off the road for a while

CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD :( but hopefully found a replacement. :D with new everything fitted :D
