1.6 vs. 1.9 how to tell which is which.
« on: November 26, 2007, 04:59:32 pm »
A friend has a caddy with a "new" engine in it, he was told it was a "98", but it looks just like any other 1.6 I have seen/worked on so I have no idea what 98 was referencing , he is under the impression that its a 1.9 from Canada as well.

Is there any difference between the 1.6 and 1.9 as far as the timing belt, tensioner, etc... are concerned?

How would I tell for sure if its a 1.9?

And it needs a block heater, where are they typically installed on these? assuming the 1.6 is the same as the 1.9.

The VC is the biggest give away. If it looks like every other 8v you've ever looked at it's a 1.6. 1.9s have 3 bolts that hold the VC on.

Block heater goes into one of the three frost plugs on the back of the engine... you reach it from under the car... some find it easier to pull the passenger side drive shaft, but if you're bendy....

if you know where to reach you can usually find the plug connection spot from right under the hood by feeling behind the engine. i always plug my block heater in from the engine bay but maybe there is more room in my rabbit. just reach around the back of the engine from the top/driver side and near the middle.
