searching for Vanagon JX injectors in the USA
« on: November 24, 2007, 09:39:28 am »
I have finally got my 82 Diesel van back with a freshly rebuilt 1.6TD form a german vanagon in it. Everything on the engine from Quality German in California was totally worn out, despite it being described as having about 70K miles on it. But now, six months and several thousand dollars later it is totally re-done, engine, turbo, injection pump and all.

The injectors are also bad, surprise, surprise, and I cannot seem to find the right injector nozzles to have them rebuilt or find complete new injectors.

So two questions for the venerable forum:

1. VW part number is 068130201B. The other numbers on the injector body are: KCA 30S36/4 and seperately the number "937" in a little box and next to it "949". Anyone know a source for these in the USA or Canada? They are also stamped "155 Bar".

2. How different are they from Rabbit/Golf injectors? That is could I use the Bunny injectors without changing things too much?

For now I want to keep the engine stock to get a baseline and to allow things to break in properly so I don't want to use Merceded nozzles or anything else too exotic. My other car is an 82 MB 240D BTW.

Hope someone out there can help with the right info or some leads. And yes, I have done the search, Luke but found no directly useful information.

thanks Andrew, then I shall order fresh injectors here in the USA.

BTW you have an intercooler on your van no? Any thoughts about the mounting options? I know from past experiments that the airflow is really squirrelly and hard to figure in the engine compartment on vans. I am thinking about a scoop on the drivers side upper vent with a well sealed-in air/air intercooler in the hole with a fan and thermostat. Means re-locating the air filter to the other side but I'm sure it can be done.

thanks Duane, I checked his website but they are out of stock. Hopefully he will get more in soon. It looks like a good source of parts.

Then once the engine is broken in I can start to play with things a little...

Andrew, I have an auxilliary oil cooler but am not sure where to mount it yet. I was thinking at the front along with the radiator. There is a diesel guy in Germany who sells a kit to do that. Plus with 20 feet of hose and the cooler it would dramatically increase the amount of oil available. My MB 240D uses 7 liters and I suspect the volume has something to do with the longevity of the motor.

Do you have any fotos of your IC set-up? Any idea of what sort of power is ok to try for in this little motor while retaining reasonable longevity? I have a Westy so the porky beast weighs in at 5300 lbs.

Duane, thanks for the offer on the rebuilding. As they are the same as the car injectors I can get those easily enough. I will be experimenting with upgrades once everything has been run in nicely Right now I am on less than 500 miles on the fresh engine. There seems to be a lot of debate about the benefits of various injectors. What is your experience with the MB nozzles?

Axel-  I'd worry about compromised oil flow with the cooler way up at the front.  I plan on removing the stock taillight clusters and putting the oil cooler in place of the righthand one (inside the sheet metal) and ducting the right scoop thru it (after moving the battery).

I have a draw full of second hand injectors, I just use them as cores for Re-Con units.
Oil cooler, I spent a bit of time doing mine, and used 5/8" tube and larger hydraulic fittings to reduce pressure drop.
I mount mine in front of the radiator.
There is a useful increase in capacity of about 1l.

Thats the 25 row version, I can also do a 13 row version for about £295

More expensive I know but mine comes with a dedicated T3 fitting kit with all stainless fasteners rather than the universal kits and smaller bore pipe the German kits seem to use.
Obviously using larger ports in the cooler bumps the prices up as do the larger bore hose and larger bore fittings.
