I've been visiting this site for months now and never noticed this, but the picture on the front page here appears to show a four valve (2 exhaust, 2 intake) diesel cylinder.  Does VW make such an engine?  Are DOHC VW diesel engines in existence?

Yup.  The 2.0 PD 16v engine.  This might be the engine in the 04 TDI Passat, but I'm just going off the top of my head.  Something like 135 hp and 175-185 ft-lbs.

I'd dig up more information but I'm in a hurry.  :P

VW has been developing that 16-valve, 2.0 liter TDI motor for years.  Anyone know if they are actually selling it yet?

It must be at least coming soon.  I found on a web search a few days ago that VW signed a deal with another major automaker(s) (Ford?) to supply the VW 2.0l 16V TDI motor to be used in the other brands (possibly only in europe, but still neat, nontheless.)  The more of those motors they sell, the more readily and inexpensively available the replacement parts will be.  I am hopeful that TDI motor may pan out to be the one worth waiting for.

That said, I don't think a TDI no matter how many valves will have as revv-happy a characteristic (or be as easy to maintain) as an IDI ;)  It would be interesting to see what kind of performance could be made with a modern, 4-valve per cylinder IDI motor, with all the advances in diesel injection technology w/ electronic controls, engine design improvements, emissions, turbocharging innovations, etc that have been discovered and/or implemented over the last 10-15 years of diesel engine development.  Although I wouldn't expect it to happen, given that strategically, VW selected DI to be their direction a long time ago.

The 16V PD piston bowl doesn't look like that, and doesn't have canted valves.  It looks to me like a gasoline direct injected engine.  For a research presentation I did in University several years ago, I had an animated GIF file that had a splitting resemblance to this logo.  I lifted that image from http://www.fev.com/, which eventually became my employer.    Look at the watermark in this page.  Look familiar?  :)

Funny you ask.  TDI-RS has recently aquired a 16v TDI engine to transplant in his monster A2 GTI.  Here's a thread on TDI club:  http://forums.tdiclub.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=919350&an=0&page=9#919350
Should be pretty wicked!  Havent seen any updates to the project in a little while, but Simon is a man of his word so I'm sure he's got something up his sleeve.
