Ive gone to that auction like ten times since yesterday.  That car would solve so many problems for me.  12" of snow and plowed in? Give it some!
Get stuck going down a dirt road to go fishing?  How many oil pans have been mangled?
It would have to conform to all applicable US emissions laws for the date of manufacture.  It would have to conform to all DOT saftey reulations for the date of manufacture, etc..
I remember reading about a varience that you could work.  If the car is owned by someone in Canada, and they come to the us to work, they can bring the car with them.  It can be registered here.  This will only work for short periods of time though, like a year.  Think, find a buddy in Canada have him come down and register it, "Park" it in your driveway.
You can also import it if it is for off-road use, like a road race car.

Last and most drastic...   ... remove everything in the way, cut it in half very carefully. Now it is scrap parts. Regs don't apply.  Weld, grind, polish, paint, smile.  Drastic and lots of work, but probably the fastest route.
***!! I wish I could just buy it and drive it home!  Slap a Franken or a hopped up 1.9 in there and that thing would rip!

I know that people have done that to get Defenders into the States, putting the VIN from a 60's to 70's Series Rover on. The problems are if you are in an accident and get found out. Insurance doesn't have to pay, BIG fine, and car gets destroyed immediately.

but still... just say its a modified golf...swap all the vins you can find.  the only problem would be if the cop or adjuster is a vw enthusiast and knows all about golf country's...

and apply to switch it over to diesel... i'm pretty sure it's just a visit to the MTO and pay some money to switch it to diesel over here in Canada...  8)

Buy it and put in storage in Canada for 9 years.

Then smile as you drive across the border 9 years later after all restrictions are dropped.
:-P

Seriously, you might be able to get it across legally, If you can get a letter from VW basically saying that the 1991 Canadian Golf met U.S. EPA and DOT Regs you can drive it home and Register it legally.

That's what the guys that bring Vanagon Double Cabs in do. The DoKa was never sold in the U.S. but since the VIN is for a "Vanagon" and the Canadian Vanagons were NA Spec they allow them in and to be titled.

Yes the Country  was imported to Canada from Germany but, Since it's titled in Canada now that may not matter anymore and it may just be viewed as a Canadian "Golf" for the NA market.  It's worth looking into at least.

See this page http://volksweb.relitech.com/85crew.htm and this one http://volksweb.relitech.com/crewimp.htm

Where it gets tricky is the VIN, he is a digit short in the description so it's tough to say what it comes up as but, for the most part it decodes as a plain old Golf. This is where the vaguenesses of how it's Titled in Canada comes in. Canadian guys here may know the details of all this better than I do but, it never hurts to ask.  Write a few letters, call a few agencies, worst they can say is No.

If it's a 1991 Canadian "Golf", the the responsible entities may not care beyond that and and give you their blessing and send you merrily on your way.

US buyers probably out of luck

I sincerely hope the sucessful bidder is in  Canada. If I'm not mistaken it is 100 % impossible to import this car into the US. In Canada vehicles older than 15yrs can be brought in if they meet the Canadian safety specs ie third brake light , Dot tires, Daytime running lights, headlights, turn signals etc. They cannot be re-exported into the US unless they meet the EPA type approval for that exact vehicle, same body, same engine, same specs, same transmission, as an existing US Model. I have a Japanese spec 91 mercedes 300D which is legal in Canada but cannot be brought into the US as the motor  a 6cyl 3litre 603.960 was never offered in US spec cars of that year. Sorry guys but be real careful or you might make an expensive mistake. Cheers Dan
