If I put up some pictures of a 1.9 TD i have here, do you think you guys could help me identify it?
I got it out of state, and this is the first one I've had any experience with, so I know literally nothing about it.

just look at the valve cover. 1.9's will have 3 rubber covers over the retaining nuts for the cover, and 1.6's will have the retaining nuts on the outside edge of the valve cover.

What jtanguay said, that's one of the easier IDs.
I did have a 1.6L with a 1.9 head (and 1.9L valve cover) bolted on though
Although 1.6/1.9TD franken engines are rare you can ID the block too.. there should be a large beveled "1.9" or "1.9 TD" on it.

My 1.9 TD says 1.9 TD on the block.
BTW Tom, you should put your location in your profile.

it has the three rubber covers. found 1.9 TD on the block too.
so is there any year of these motors that you wouldn't want?

I am no expert, but I don't know of any bad years. One thing that can be a problem is the crank and harmonic balancer. I guess lots of people get them machined for the TDI balancer as if the IDI balancer bolts get loose, it can
break the tip of the crank, meaning there goes the timing belt, and lots of internal damage.

The multi-grooved pulley closest to the block. It has rubber sandwiched between the inner and outer steel to help reduce engine vibration. If you don't machine it, I guess the one available from the Bus Depot, busdepot.com is the thing to get. I have one, but it just got put on during my rebuild, so I have no comment on it.

that brings up another question...
i don't know what this motor came out of, so when i go to a place like busdepot.com and it asks for a vehicle model/year/etc. what do i do?

That I can't tell you. For a lot of parts, it really doesn't matter much. I'd say that year matters a lot more than vehicle.

go ahead and post the pics anyway...
now, someone feel free to correct me, but...
the engine code should be aaz.
they were typically available in 93-97 canadian jettas and golfs
some were available in 92-95 passats, although i think they had another 1.9 also before moving to a tdi
parts shouldn't be a problem, and what has already been said about the crank pulley and such are all you need to know - nothing really 'bad' about the motors except for that. the timing can be advance, the fuel delivery tweaked and with an intercooler and boost, these things can really haul ass.
do a search for 1.9, aaz, or crank pulley and you'll have more reading than you ever really wanted. LOL
what were you going to out it in?

The only real difference I know of is in connecting rods/bolts. Up to '95 uses one style of bolt/rod combo, '96-97 uses one similar to the TDI. The early ones have locating pins in the rod & cap and a more normal looking bolt, the later ones use the bolt to locate the cap.

And that's the K14 turbo, isn't it?
That means it's an older AAZ engine. I think VW went to the K03 turbo by about 1995 or 1996. So you probably have one from a 1993 or 1994 car.
I think the Passats with the AAZ had an EGR setup, so no EGR means Golf/Jetta.
Look for posts here by "Cheesetoast". I think he has a Golf with that generation of AAZ engine in it.
