1.9TD cam on a 1.6TD

Will there be any gains made by swapping a 1.9 cam onto my 1.6? Will it even fit? I tried searching but didn't come up with anything.
Are there any other stock options that I could use instead of my 1.6 cam?
I'm a cheap ass, what can I say
It's a hydrolic lifter head BTW

From what i know the 1.6 td cam has a higher exhaust lift...so it is a little more performance oriented than the 1.9 td one!!!!
so you might actually loose performance.....

Won't be doing that then. What about any other stock cams? I heard some gas ones can be used, but you need to do a pile of machine work, which would make the PP ones cheaper

i think its reverse
It is possible to successfully put the 1.9 IDI head on the early 1.6 blocks, however the 1.9 head was engineered for a bottom end that was 300 cc larger, so what I have found out is that the prechambers are larger in the 1.9 head to accomidate larger displacement. Being that there is more volume in the 1.9 head, installing it on a 1.6 bottom end would result in lower compression. I havn't ran the C.R. numbers but I too had this same set up with bad luck!
No doubt, the 1.9 head was far superior to the 1.6 head with the larger intake valves, 7mm stems, and the "D" shaped intake ports were awesome, but the lack of compression made it difficult to start when cold. I ended up having to advance the timing to 1.15mm to help compinsate for the low compression(advancing timing to allow it more time for fuel to burn), but even with that it still was not nice. When the engine was warm or tempuratures were warm it ran awesome! I wouldn't recomend it to anyone.

I don't get it. The quote from mk1TD says absolutely nothing about cams or lift in it...
Andrew
I was also failling to see the connection. One was refering to the cam, the other to the head :?:

the head is better but the cam is less agressive on the exhaust side.

So what about a 1.9 head on a 1.6 block with 1.7 pistons, a 1.6 cam, 1.9 IP with the gov out of a 1.5?

the 1.6 pump with a 12 mm head 1.9 camplate in it with a twin turbo setup maybe a small k03 spoolin a k24?

Foxracer1,
I read your ideas about piecing those different engine pieces together and understood everything except for the 1.7 pistons. Do these have the same bore as the 1.6 but just ride higher up in the block? To the best of my knowleadge, the stock 1.6 pistons already prject slightly above the surface of the block. Anyway, if they did work, could the 1.7s compensate enough to bring the C.R. anywhere near stock? If so, i think you've put together some very intriguing ideas....

Well yeah what libbybapa said. But these are very rare and probably hard to come by but check this link out might clear it up a bit. So do the camplates just allow the plunger to inject more fuel. What degree of dificulty are these to swap.

Could you also use the timming advance from a 1.5 also? And maybe the linkage from the pumps with the idle up feture on the cold start. i would like that very much.

Ok sort of related here...what cam is better the 1.6TD or the 1.9TD any final answer? AND will either work on the ALH TDI since it has the least agressive cam of any of them as far as I know.
I'm thinking of this as an alternative for us..um...tightwads.

Iirc the lobe seperation is differnt on all three. 1.6, 1.9, TDI. I also seem to remeber the 1.9 having more duration then the 1.6... but I havent looked at the specs in 2 years. Dave at PP would be the best source for answering the differnces of all of the cams.

Yeah the lobe separation is different on all the cams, just stick with the 1.6td cam or go with a performance grind. 1.9td cam is not so hot.

So have you tried/got decent results running a 1.9TD cam in a TDI or a 1.6TD? I'm not looking for incredible things to happen, but I can get a cam for free for my next TB change, and wouldn't mind trying something different.
