Injectors installed without heatshields.

So the car slowly started smoking more, idling quite roughly (shaking) and has been harder to start. I pulled the injectors because I saw they looked a little damp and found this:
Verified pump timing at 1.02. Injectors rebuilt by Giles 10,000km ago.
Cleaned them up this morning, put them back in with washers and symptoms persist. Are they literally cooked?

I hope that you didn't do that injector installation.

I don't see where the heat shields sat on the injectors.
There is usually a ring.
You used heat shields right?

No, i did not install these injectors. They were done by the mechanic across the country after my timing belt snapped. I should've checked them though.
What you see on the injectors is carbon buildup in the bowl shape of the seet in the head. The only contact surface was the outer perimeter.
10,000kms without shields in rebuilt injectors.

Oh, I guess I didn't read the title of the post.
At least it's an easy fix.
The injectors should be fine.
Not sure why it's still running funny.
Have you checked the timing belt?
If it's new, sometimes they stretch and the timing can jump.
If you hit high RPMs.
If that happened the belt will need moved a tooth on the injection pump.
Sometimes contitech belts need to be retensioned after a couple thousand miles.

All the marks lined up when I checked pump timing. You are right though, when I first installed the belt it was tight and has since loosened up and Ive adjusted it since.
Ive read that the washers are important for a number of reasons including heat insulation. I wonder if one of the injectors has been compromised. Or a few of them, really, due to the extra heat load.

Right, they are called "heat shields".
Probably not someone local who could pressure test them for you.
I have heard of someone turning the injector lines the other way with injectors on them and watching the spray.
That won't let you know about the pressure they are breaking.

I will swap with a good set and get the current ones tested and report back.
