AAZ first start-up.. Noisy?
« on: March 14, 2022, 03:45:35 pm »
Hey guys,

I recently purchased a 1993 golf with the AAZ.. it was a non-running car when I bought it. But the previous owner told me the engine was running strong, but the injection pump was toast.

So I replaced the IP and put a new timing belt on while I was at it. I never had an IDI before, only a 2011 TDI. Is an IDI supposed to be way noisier than a TDI? My wife could hear from inside the house... to give you an idea.

I'll post a video as soon as I have figured out how to put a link in here.. I'm wondering if it's a rod knock or simply the way it sounds...

Keasbey,

Sounds PERRRRRFECT.   Yeah, much more noise compared to the newer diesel.  Let's the wife and all the pets know you are on the way home as you turn the corner or pull into the drive.

I can't quite read the label, but if that is a can of starter fluid (ether) then NEVER USE IT AGAIN on a VW diesel!  It has a tendency to break compression rings on these engines!

Nah.. it was a can of silicon lubricant I used earlier.. Don't worry!

But I rechecked the timing this morning, rechecked all my marks, and while rotating the engine by hand, I noticed that everytime the "high point" of a lobe start to touch a puck, the engine seems to lock a little bit.. is this normal or should I be worried that the valves are hitting the pistons? Once a apply a little more force to it it goes...  But I never did a timing belt on a diesel engine before so I don't really know whats "normal" or not. Cam/crank/pump marks are spot on..

Each time a camshaft lobe starts depressing a lifter (and the valve spring under it) the crankshaft becomes harder to turn.  I can't feel from here if that is what you're feeling.

The video does not sound like valves are being hit by pistons.

Thanks! I was worried that something went wrong along the way hehe I'll triple check to make sure.. and leave it be if everything lines up correctly.
