MKI TRANNY INTO A MKII?

Lost 5th in my MKII. Is there anyway I can squeeze a MKI Diesel tranny [That I already own] into my MKII? For cheaper than it would cost to buy/fix my silly gasser tranny I have now?

what trans are you taking out? does it have 100mm axle flanges?

whats going back in there? if its a mk1 diesel trans, it DOES NOT HAVE 100mm axle flanges..

gotta make sure your axle flanges are 90mm to fit the mk1 trans, or swap your inner CV joints to 90mm units.

but if you already have 90mm axles, then it should fit fine.

its an 020, yes it will bolt in place of another 020, but you may not be able to hook up the axles.. if you cant hook up your axles to it, i wouldnt even worry about if it fits or not..

but yes, it SHOULD fit. as long as the final drive housing is drilled to accept the mk2 style rear mount.. and of course, the axle flanges fitting the axles..

you may have to change the gear selector linkage on the trans to the mk2 piece. i guess they ARE different..

Just look at the mk2 tranny and see how it mounts then look at the mk1 tranny and see if it has what needs to be drilled. You could modify it to fit if need be...

These are the only MK1 trannies that will bolt into a MK2:

7A
9A
4K
2H

All the other ones (FF, FO, FM, FK, FN, F---, etc) will not bolt into a MK2. They lack the bosses on the differential housing for the MK2/3 rear mount.

A quick way to tell if the trans will work, is to look and see if the driver's side flange has a GREEN metal cup behind it that holds the seal. If it does, you're good to go. If it doesn't, it won't fit without you modifying the rear trans mounting.

Man.. I'm so pumped it'll work. I was going to be so mad if it was the FF's that would fit and the 7A's wouldn't. I just sold a perfect FF. I'm gonna swap this asap.

Ok so I have the 7A but my Golf is a 1990 Golf Gasser converted to a Diesel but with the Gasser tranny.   Thank you PO.   Are my flanges good to go or should/can I swap the two?

Edit: By this I mean is one 100mm and one 90mm and can they be swapped?
