asf transmission flanges are loose and leaking severly
« on: November 20, 2010, 12:38:08 am »
Both axle flanges have a lot of play and slide in and out.  Is this trans junk or a easy in car fix.  I have both axles removed and c clips are still in tacked.

Replace the flanges and seals.

The flanges wear like that and start to leak. How many miles are on the trans.?

They should not slide back and forth at all. I could see one spring broken but both broken is unlikely. Maybe the previous owner took the springs out for some stupid reason.  ::)

*Upon further review I learned mk1 trans may or may not have springs*

There is around 220k miles on it.  I replaced the clutch a month or so back and there was no leaks then.  all this happened in about 2000 miles.  I would like to fix this trans cause only others I can find are a 9A AGS  AUG and a FF   Only trans I think will fit my needs is the FF if it would only fit my car.

Did these flanges float like this when you put in the clutch?
Are you sure this is not carrier bearings?
Did you still have a 5th gear that worked before you began disassembly?
This is weird stuff man! I'm guessing that trans has departed for the happy hunting grounds.
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

Love mine also. I liked it before when it had the original R&P ratio. Now with the 3.667 I like it better.

white gear is for 3.67 gears isnt it? and red is for 3.94 gears?

you shouldnt notice much change.. the only difference in fifth gear is that your running thru a 3.94 final drive now, instead of a 3.67..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

I just checked  out this website http://www.scirocco.org/gears/
On there it said 3k rpm with .75 5th is 70 mph for the ags
the asf trans is 75 mph at 3k rpm  ether my tach is wrong or my speedo is off
