I have a 1986 Golf 2 door hatchback with a 1.6 N/A diesel coupled to a 5 speed tranny. Today I was in a hurry and got it up to 70 m.p.h. before shifting into 5th gear. I don't have a tach, but she was definately talking to me!
Anyone else ever get one up that fast in 4th.......?

Don't know but my 71 beetle will bury the speedo [90 mph] in third.

Not sure. I know that I got it to 85mph in 5th gear once (down hill). I have the original GTI transmission, which gives a bit lower rpm than the diesel transmissions do (oddly... you'd think it would be the other way round, but look at the ratios....)

Yeah, 85mph is about all I can get outta my little 1.6 n/a too. It must be the absolute perfect conditions though. No head wind, no hill, and an absolute straight road for miles!

I can easily hit 140 in my NA. It'll go a lot further but I'm afraid of speeding tickets.
I also have a AGS but I'm swapping in a ACN I think.

Sunday I had the jetta at 70 in 4th at 4000 rpm and then 75, rpms at just a shade under 4300. I usually shift to fifth at 65 - 70 mph.

I got an ACN behind the 1.6 in my 86 jetta. I can easily hit 70 in fourth. I LOVE MY ACN. used to have the gp four speed.

The '84 rabbit owners manual says: use 4th gear between 28mph and top speed, E gear (5th) between 36mph and top speed.

with a stock governor, and a GC 4 speed, i could go 83 mph, down hill with a tail wind. or 83 on flat ground. or 83 up a steep hill. now with my governor shimmed up and an AUG close ratio trans w/ 3.67 final, it will go ATLEAST 125 mph on flat ground. thats all the harder ive gotten to run it so far. im going to be getting an ACN for it before too long. the .75 fifth and 3.67 will be nice.
still have no idea how many rpms my car turns.. no tacho.

How did you clock it at 125mph? GPS?
You can figure your rpm here,

I got mine to 95mph going downhill in 5th gear. In 4th I haven't gone past 75mph.
