Received a letter today in the mail stating that someone turned me in reporting that at 10am on dec 19th my car was smoking. HMMM at 10 am on a cold morning. Smoke, or was it condensation? I notice no smoke from my car unless I hold the gear for way to long then its not even that much. If my car is cold yea it does the typical cold burn off. Im betting it was an old person who has nothing better to do.
Edit yes my car needs injectors and what not, but its not that bad...yet.

Wow, with friends like this, who needs enemies?
Maybe someone's Latte wasn't ready yet, they looked out the window, and felt the need to report you.
And more than likely, government bureaucracy got in the way of common sense and someone had to make sure you got the letter.
I'd be afraid to drive my 89 down the PCH.

Sorry for being an ignorant UK resident on this matter, but what happens next then? You only have a civilian eye witness to this which would never be able to be used to issue a summons of any kind. Will your car now have to be inspected and tested? Or wll your car now just be 'marked'?
That is the good thing over here, we have the test once a year to check emissions, then as long as it isn't stupidly smokey, alls good until next year
And yes, I have to agree. The person who reported you REALLY needs to find something better to do with their time....like see how long they can survive in a blocked off mineshaft!

if you cut some one off or annoy them in some way, I supose they could report you as smoking..?? Sounds like once reported you are guilty until proven innocent. Or do I have it wrong?

It doesn't sound like I HAVE to do anything. It recommends I get my car checked out for smog issues. Its a diesel and we don't smog aka test diesels here. They want me to fill out a questionaire about it too but Im not going to. Cold mornings here usually are around 30-40 degrees F.

that aint cold! it was 30 Below here just this week!
and all the cars(even new gassers) look like they are smoking like a chimney from all the hot moisture turning into fog as it hits the cold ass air.
dont worry about it, being a diesel they cant do anything since there is no program for testing and licensing according to emissions.

Prius (damn how do you spell that?) owners :x .
I'm sure it was revenge for the Jetta getting the green car of the year award.
They still have a hard time dealing with that.

Yeah, I've received several letters like that. Always assumed it was some impatient scum whose company supplied fuel for their giant SUV or crew-cab dually commuting vehicle. Whatever... just in case I had actually smoked some tailgater, I always wrote them a note stating I'd had the injection pump timing checked, installed new glow plugs, changed the air filter, or some such story (hey... we're always workin' on our diesels, right?). Never had a problem, or even a return comment with that approach.
The last letter, a couple of months ago, was re. my Saturn gasoline burner, which had just passed the CA SMOG Check test. Obviously this report was a sour grapes driver, so I called up the SCAQMD & told them so. They agreed & said that they get a lot of that, and that it wasn't a 'perfect system'. duh! They further said to disregard the notice & thanked me for doing my part to help air quality.
Don't sweat it... they can, but don't... do squat about it. Any contact with them re. the letter appears to be positively received.

I drove some at -50F and even the gassers reek like ever, one'll pull out in front of me with a cold engine and floor it and the road actually disappears.
