Original diesel, just at 102 K miles. I bought it recently and the engine ran perfect until today. I think it has sat alot for some time by the vehicles looks, but it cleaned up good. I have about 800 miles on it and it is getting 39 mpg in town.
At a 75 mph on a steady interstate run, in 80 degree weather, the engine suddenly cut out. I pushed in the clutch and said oh....^&** or something like that. No lights, and the engine was idling. I put it back in gear and all was fine. No noticable problems... OIL oK, no funny noises,
It cut out a few more times, and it always came right back and started again. It seems like the problem is in the fuel injection pump. It's like something in there sticks or jams and then, when I let off the accelerator a time or two, it frees up.
Recommendations?
check the connector on the stop solenoid on the pump, it might be loose
also have a look at the main earthing cable that runs to and from the alternator to the gearbox bellhousing! it may of become loose
May be a silly questions, but:
How's the fuel filter?
Do you ever see air in the fuel line between the filter and pump?
If it's partially blocked by old crap that was sitting in the tank/lines then you'd only notice performance issues when at high RPMs. Blockages in the fuel lines will cause tell-tale air bubbles in the fuel lines, which will cause the engine to stutter/loose power when they hit the injectors.
