Is there any difference between the gas 5sp, and the diesel ones in Rabbits? If I switch from a 4sp to a 5sp, will I need the whole shift stick assembly? Thanks,
Joseph
They will bolt up as long as they are both from a MK1, otherwise you may have problems with mounting it.
www.vwbroke.com has good info on it.
I think there are 3 pieces of the shifter linkage that need to change. Personally I'd just buy one of the ebay rebuild kits that include all the pieces. The 4 and 5 speed tranny mount is different. I may have all the parts if you need them
I think gearing differs... gas would have longer gears.. gti would have incredibly short gears..
I like this chart
http://www.scirocco.org/gears/You have to know your tranny code, but once you have that it's all downhill
Yeah the basic design is the same but the ratios are very different!
As an example the Golf 3 TDi would do 130mph at 4500rpm in 5th.
A Corrado 16V (similar to a GTI) would only do 98 at 4500rpm!
Do it the other way - at 55mph in 5th the TDI would be pulling about 1900rpm, whereas the GTI would be doing 2500
Post your trans code and I'll do the sums for you

When the tranny for my '86 1.6 went out, I grabbed what I had, one from a gasser. Wow, ya could have knocked me over. Finally, could get up to 70 mph without the motor cramping out high revs. Now can cruise 70 at around 2800 rpm. Sweet and quiet. The lower gears are higher, true, but I'm not hauling cattle or a trailer, so no problem.
