So I'm about to pull the 1.6td out of the samurai this weekend. The rings appear to be shot as the breather smokes like a freight train. At idle, there is more smoke coming out of the crank case than what is being sucked into the turbo. (I have a loose fitting intake pipe on the turbo) that is also pumping oil into the intake.
The injector pump also has a leak when cold.
So, who do you recommend to rebuild a hydraulic head in the lower mainland (Vancouver B.C. area)
And who would you recommend to rebuild the injector pump.
I understand Giles is quite respected when it comes to power mods but I'm not sure I need his services.
I am not looking for massive power upgrades, reliability and fuel economy are the first priorities in order with the easy and safe power mods tagging along behind. With those goals in mind items such as ceramic coated piston tops are more than likely out (unless some one posts up a very good reason to go that way)
head studs and metal headgasket are in (adds to the reliability, unless some one posts up that is an old wives tale...) and items such as an intercooler for the power mods would be in (maybe not right a way)
So, help me rebuild my engine. Looking for suggestions on vendors and parts to use as well as what can be reused and what should be replaced.
I think you have the right of it -- ceramic coat those piston tops (if you want), use ARP head studs, use a metal head gasket, etc.
Someone here or on vwdieselparts.com reported that ceramic-coating the piston tops helped cold starting, and it should reduce oil temperature too I would think. Certainly not necessary though.
"Trev0rbr"get a 1.9 head
Why would I want to do this?
I understand a 1.9 head lowers compression and would cause cold start problems.... Or do I have that completley wrong?
it will make them start harder in the cold, but i think it is extremely exaggerated how bad it is. partly because of chris's thread where he did the swap and had horrible cold starts due to low compression and a bent valve. once i do my swap i'll definetly give a review on cold starts haha. so far malone is the only one to have give to a good review on a motor in excellent shape, and his compression was lower than a normal 1.6/1.9, he didn't seem to have much trouble. just some white smoke when first started. theres alot of threads on it if you want pursue it.

I've done two of the 1.9/1.6 combo's, malones Franken motor and another customers about a year ago, it really does make for some smokey cold starts, definitely not something I would do to a used motor, only a motor with new oversized piston etc etc.
Anyone have suggestions where to take the head to be rebuilt?
Yellow pages are a gamble and I'm not familiar with what vendors do what in the vancouver area yet.
