Author Topic: Bosch Duratherms in a turbo with a slow relay ?? (Read 5149 times)

Gotta replace my glow plugs... Bosch Duraterms seem like the ones to buy, but my 86 is a turbo with slow plugs currently, and as far as I can read the fast system is not recommended for early turbos.

Having said that, the Duraterms look like they might be slow-compatible as well (not clear on Bosch's site)... anyone running this particular combination ?? Am I correct that fast glow plugs are not recommended for early turbos ??

The slow plugs are obsolete. Durtherms are fast plugs. You need to get a fast relay.

I suppose the slow plugs may have been specified originally, but you have no choice now.

Duraterms will work fine and won't burn out with a slow relay, they stay on for 3 minutes in the 1.9TD. The engine will be ready to start long before the light goes out though.

You could switch to a fast relay and the operation of the light would be correct but it isn't absolutely necessary.

Thanks guys.... pretty sure I've read the fast relay is not recommended for the early turbos (lots of extra smoke) so I'll try 'em slow first. Someday the junkyard will get me a fast relay and I'll try that as well.

Do you have a source that states its ok to use Duratherms with the slow relay? Or are you basing it on experimental results?

bosch duraterms can be left on for quite a while... just look at the bosch duraterms that vw puts directly into the coolant for faster warmups... i do believe they stay on for 4-5 mins!!! granted the coolant helps cool the GP so that it doesn't burn out, but the duraterms are pretty robust.

Nope, but they seldom burn out operating 3 minutes at every start, hot or cold, in a 1.9TD, I think it's fairly safe to assume they'll be alright for 15 seconds in a slow glow 1.6TD.
