I've got an 82 VW caddy 1.6 NA with almost 180k miles.
I just replaced the injectors (AAZs, cause I had em) and now I'm getting run away.
There's no smoke out the exhaust anywhere, my residual screw is all the way out.
It does have the governor mod done.
I'm getting 27mpg because I have no power, I have to drive in 4th gear to get it to barely go 60mph, some hills on my way home it won't go 55mph.
but still, no smoke.
'cept smoke out the breather, but I just tried disconnecting the breather, and it still ran away.
the run away I have it only at higher rpms, if I keep it down low-mid rpm, it's fine.
Since the injectors, it runs alot smoother, but I still have zero power.
I'm not really getting any oil mist out of the breather, it's just smoke, like burning oil.
tried comp testing it a while back, couldn't get the tester into the left 2 cylinders, but the right 2 were midway within the limits, but I'd also assume that if I had a bad cylinder, I'd have smoke, which I don't.
well i think your pump is screwed... you must have messed up the governor mod. if your fuel screw is turned all the way out, then i would expect runaway at high rpm. that must mean that you have modded the low rpm governor spring incorrectly??? so that at high rpm, the motor gets a surge of fuel and keeps going. letting your foot off the accelerator should stop the fake 'runaway' though (and leaving it in gear)
but this all happened when you changed your injectors right? i think some AAZ injectors have 2 stages of breaking pressure. were the AAZ injectors ever rebuilt??? are the injectors turbo or non turbo? the turbo ones open at a higher pressure, so that will affect timing and fuel economy. all things to think about! you could try advancing timing to around 1.05mm and see how things go. i'd imagine a bit of power increase, and mpg increase. the motor must be running quite retarded.
governor mod was successfull, I did it about 6-7 months ago. Never had any runaway problems.
my residual/idle screw is all the way out, haven't touched the max screw because I'm not smoking, if anything, it should go in because I'm not smoking. (or is it the other way around, I can't ever remember)
leaving it in gear does stop the runaway at mid and low rpm, higher rpm it just drives along, doesn't really slow down on compression, if you know what I mean.
I started getting the runaway when I changed the nozzles today, yes.
My apologies, I didn't change the injectors, I replaced the nozzles, so they're still NA single-stage injectors, but with AAZ nozzles.
I'm going to mess with timing tomorrow, but I think it's just a bad pump, cause I have screwed with timing before.
no bubbles in any fuel lines, they were all replaced 2 months ago with Viton, as well, and the tank isn't clogged, fuel came out in a nice steady stream when I popped the line off.
thanks
hmmm i find that the governor mod can make the motor run really weird... as in lots of power way up top, and weird idling / shudder problems down low. very hard on the motor mounts.
named tintin was talking of how he mods the governor springs, and does not touch the intermediate i think...
When I first did the gov mod I had it shimmed way too much and it would over fuel it like crazy. The pedal would progressively increase pull then around 75-80% throttle it would pull less and less then smoke white. of course EGTs were sky high.
well, I'm pretty sure one of my problems is that the throttle shaft is off one notch, that's why backing the idle screw off all the way doesn't have much affect.
so I'll fix that tomorrow.
