Which exhaust seal (between manifold and downpipe) is better, solid or braided? Do the c springs weaken with time? I have a pretty bad exhaust leak at that connection, I need to fix it so the car will pass inspection (that and it is really noisy)
The VW ones come as a kit with one toilet bowl gasket and two springs. So, you may as well change the springs as you'll have them.

I changed mine out when I installed my rebuilt 1.6 TD and it still leaks there. Or at least that whole area is all covered with black soot. I'm begining to think that my pipe from the toilet bowl to the cat is cracked. Just have not gotten around to physically checking it out. Life here for me has been busy with the family and building a new garage.
