Pump timing help?

Today at last I had the time to adjust the timing properly on my Caddy Td, BUT after spending most of the afternoon on it I have admitted defeat for now. I knew the pump want right as its sat as far forward uptight to the engine and it makes a horrible clanging sound, but it starts and drives, I put in the dial gauge and set the timing to Tdc set the guage to 3 mm, wound back until the gauge stopped then set the gauge to 1mm and wound forward back to Tdc, the pump was out a long way so I loosened off the 4 bolts and adjusted the pump but I could only get it as close as 1.6mm, I tried this 4 different times but I could only get the pump as far as it would pull forward and the timing was still a long way out. So I decided to try to move the pump a tooth on the belt forward and then back but still no where near timing wise, I then decide to go back to where I started with the pump lock everything back up and see if I could move the crank so the top end was all a tooth different, I again tried this in both directions but nothing again. So i put everything back to where I started and got the timing to about 1.6 again, and guess what no start, I eventually got really annoyed pushed the pump up as close to the engine as physically possible so it starts again but sounds terrible and according to the Guage is way out, someone please help?

It sounds like the pump is a tooth off, you may want to start all the way over from scratch, set the pump at about the middle of it's possible range of adjustment and then retime the engine.

It dont make sense though that I couldnt get the pump timing right even when I moved the belt a tooth in either direction?

I bought a rabbit a couple years ago that would not run after the owner replaced a leaking Injector Pump. The gear was not lined up with the key way on the shaft when he tightened the nut and it ruined the gear. Check the mark on the pump with the mark on the gear with the pump lock in place.

I think Im just gonna have to start a fresh and go from there, I cant understand how the timing is that far out and its runs just noisily! And when I get the timing as close to what it should be, I think its about 1.6, it wont start at all, or even fire! Is there any other way of checking Tdc, I had in the past replaced the Flywheel with a different type, but Was told that the mark would be in the same place, the cam lobes on 1 and 2 are pointing upwards and the cam Locked but no matter what I do I cant get the timing anywhere near on the pump. I need the pump to be further forward than the 4 bolts will allow for timing but the pump needs to be as far back against the engine for the car to start. The pump couldnt be different could it, it came from the same model of car just a later spec, but still a 1.6Td, I did notice the injectors look visibly different in shape.

No, Metric Dti, and I know how horribly advanced it is, but it wont start anyway like that, it'll only start when it seems retarded Alot! No bent valves either, she starts and runs really well with no noise other than the clanging. Is there any other way of making sure Im on Tdc other that the mark on the flywheel, Like I said, I have noticed the injectors are different so I'll be changing those before doing anything else.

perhaps you timed the pump 180 degrees off, so what seems to be too much advance is actually way retarded.

Yeah but it wouldn't run 180 out would it, no matter how far retarded I make the pump?

I am a near-total noob but maybe your cold-start adjustment is way out or something (if you have one, I don't know).
