I have a 91 ECO with 305,000 miles and a new Giles pump (what a difference!!). The timing is set at .95mm per Giles suggestion and I rechecked it a couple of times. Took it to my mechanic and even he mentioned how good it runs. While the pump was out, I replaced the injectors and glow plugs (both from Jack at VWdieselparts). My problem is that the engine sounds like a gasser with a pinging problem only when it's cold. After it warms up some, it only makes the sound when you begin to accelerate. When it's warm, no sound. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like nailing. As to why, I wouldn't venture to guess not knowing what is involved in a giles pump.
Typicaly I'd check all timings and cast a dirty look at the injectors spray pattern.
I've running modded pump, and lots of timing (1.05mm),with no pinging at all.
Are you sure the timing is dead on ? Did you roll the motor back far enough when zeroing ? Take the slack out of the belt ? I'd do it again and see.
Thanks for the help. I will check with Giles on the pump side. Maybe I have a bad injector. The nailing is worse at low rpm and low temp. I will check the timing again, but I think it's ok. This was my first time replacing a timing belt so I was extra careful/paranoid.
