Oil in the Reservoir/expansiontank? (1.9D)

My friends car has loads of oil in his expansiontank/reservoir.
Really nasty...
No other symtoms with the car, no smoke (oh well hell, of course there is lots of soot) but nothing else.
My guess is either the oil cooling/warmer on the oil-filter housing or the head gasket.
What do you guys think? Normal problem?

Mine did that and it was the HG. Not sure if it's common on the mk3 but on the mk2 the oil cooler/heater tends to leak causing your symptoms.
Start with what's cheapest, a compression test. Only $4 for new heat sheilds

Headgasket. Or the head is cracked. Regardless, a fix will require the head coming off...

I'd check the compression first. If it yeilds good results, check the oil cooler. I guess its fairly common for the oil cooler to rot and mix oil + coolant.

ive always heard about the oil cooler being suspect,ive never had it happen though
i had oil in my water before,and it was the HG
the little rubber o ring around that one oil passage on the gasket went out
since oil psi is higher than the water pressure,the oil goes in the water(usually)
use a mix of cascade and water to flush it out after you fix it
mix like 3/4 of a cup of cascade in like 1.5 gallons of hot water so the detergent melts,and pour it in and run it

Allthough, its seems as he did not like the answer...
Hes fed up with his NA diesel, so were putting a 1.6TD in instead =)

It is my understanding that the 1.9 NA still has the piston cooling oil squirters and so fitting a turbo to it should handle turbocharging just fine. Also, the 1.9n/a motor has the hp/torque of the 1.6TD, but you don't have to wait for it to spool. If he wants better performance and you install a 1.6TD he will be disappointed. If you plan on suping up a 1.6TD, why not replace the 1.9 headgasket and supe it up instead for that extra grunt of the additional .3 liters of displacement?

So what your meaning is I should mount/exchange the 1.9 N/A head with a 1.6TD head, and use the 1.6TD headgasket?
If its that "easy", were starting a new project =)

Well, a 1.6TD is good, but kinda overkill....
as for my experience.
I have a 1.6TD, and it in fact WAS the oil cooler, I've also had the same issue happen on my 3a Audi 80. so before you go changing a head or doing any of that funky jazz..
go to the scrappy, pull the oil cooler, and change it on the next oil change.... dont forget you'll be doing the coolant at the same time too!
dimes to donut holes, it's the cooler.
if I've had it happen twice.... it could very well happen to anyone at any time.

klang, libbybapa is saying (I think!) your buddy should just repair the fault and keep that engine instead of swapping it to a 1.6TD.

Flush the cooling system really well, I hear dishwasher detergent crystals work well, then bypass the oil cooler once clean. I swap the resevoir with a new one everytime, costs under $20 saves tons of time and yes I have always had to change the headgasket never the oil cooler although the cars are getting older...anything is possible

I've had the oil cooler go bad. Its a PITA to change without removing a/c :x
What was happening to my car, was that my oil level was going up (yea really really weird), but only when the car was warm. When the car was cooled down it seemed fine. Did I mention that I was able to pop off my coolant reservoir cap??? (not kidding, maybe it was left a bit loose (just a little). I gave it one good hard run down the road, came home, and my oil level went up, as well as finding my coolant cap flopping around and steam coming out. Funny, but it was pretty scary as I cant afford to replace a whole engine. Thank god it was just the cooler!
I went to a buddy's place and he had a bunch of vw parts, so I rummaged around, and what do I find? AN OIL COOLER!!! I could have had it for free, but i dished out 80 bucks :evil:. At least its pressure tested, and brand new though. I didn't know that the 2.0L came with oil coolers, or rather, oil warmer...? Hmmm. Broadens the list of cars to yank one out of.

If I were you, I would switch to a metal HG (I had one on my car and was wondering how it could be leaking, and some people on this board told me to check my oil cooler. So I did, and it leaked...) and change the oil cooler, and be done with your worries.

Thanks for all of your answers.
It seems I have a 50 / 50 answer if it could be the oilcooler or HG.
So what I'm going to do is bypass the oil cooler and drain / clean the cooling system, and then go for a ride..
If theres oil, new HG (new 1.6td head).
My next question is, where can I get a hold of a metal HG thats will fit on a 1.9 N/A block and 1.6td head?

use cascade to flush it like i said earlier
bypass the cooler and all that,,you may have to flush it a few times
itll be all grey,,,keep flushing till its clean
you may need to let it get warm a few times to help get the oil melt and mix in the coolant for easier flushing

Here's mine. Mighty proud of it.

Guess I need to pressure check the cooling system.
Note: At LibbyBapa's suggestion I just came over from VwDieselparts.com forum. This week I scanned over all the previous posts (32pages) in the IDI Engine section. Some very good info. White paper and ASE and Bosch VE injection pump stuff is great info. Loved the thread on changing over a gas tach to a diesel, good job Fatmobile (or is it Fastmobile now?). Great information pool ya'll got here.
