If I were to head to the junkyard, which cars would you guys recommend pulling a turbo off of to put on my 1.6 NA?

Probably the easiest route would be to find the stock Garrett or KKK unit that came from a VW TD, but I suspect that you're looking for other cars that would have a compatible turbo.
Others will chime in, but are you using the stock TD manifold? If so, obviously, you'll have to pick a turbo that has the right exhaust housing to match up to the manifold. Next, you'll want to make sure that the flow characteristics of the turbo match the comparatively low-reving attributes of the IDI TD engine.
Also...it you're doing the NA--> TD conversion, there are a bunch of different posts on here covering that subject in particular. It can be done, but there a number of considerations you'll want to keep in mind when boosting an NA.

I would consider a TD motor or atleast a TD head, Oil squiters, TD pistons rings, turbo diesel manifold, TD intake, rods.... etc
Turn up the fuel and decrease the idle screw, have an open intake and exhaust with a muffler, look around for a TD which are out there, ebay, scrappy, or on this board.
If you want more power consider the governor mod, and this will help to reduce your fuel usage but have a nice power band abover 2250 rpm with is when the pump begins to cut fuel off on these pumps.
The governor mod will not be a major increase on an NA motor because of the lack of extra Airflow to sustain the extra fuel from the pump. Others will post here and prob tell you more about the advantages.......

Thanks for the info. Yea if I were to need a lot of things swapped onto the NA anyway I'd probably pull a whole TD if I could find it. I was hoping it wouldn't be too much trouble to fab up an exhaust system (I have the means) and put a turbo on the NA that would work well.

the exhaust system is fairly easy to do
if ya dont boost it to the moon,ya could just get the turbo, manifolds+ inj pump, and make up your oil drain into the pan

It a diesel in the end, but it will never hold up to the boost that the TD motor will see. The main concern is the lack of oil squirters direct at the pistions. 16V motors also come with these wicked coolers, but running with out them will limit the boost. Running 5 -10 lbs of boost on a NA bottom end would be max. It is do able but a TD motor has what you need for excellent power upgrades.

No you can run all the boost you want, just keep your egt temps down a bit lower. There is a local here that has a NA to Turbo conversion done by myself and he has been running 26 psi through a big front mount for about 9 months. I have his car tuned to not exceed 1300 degrees.

Ceramic coated piston crowns would be just as good as oil squirters. $$$ though.
