hey everyone
i just picked up a 91 jetta na diesel,it doesn't run.owner says that it may be a bad head.
i have a engine that i took out of my caddy and i was wondering if anyone know if the head from the caddy would work with the jetta.or if the whole engine would have to be swapped.
thanks
jay
I think the whole engine will need to be swapped.
The 91 should be a hydro head and the one from the caddy is probably mechanical. That would be your only hurdle. If they are both mechanical or both hydro then you are good to go
thats what im not sure of.
An 81 head would be mechanical, a 91 would be hydraulic. You can use the mechanical head on the hydraulic block as long as you find a way to block off the extra oil return passage in the block. You would then need to measure piston projection above TDC and select the appropriate gasket for a mechanical head.
If you remove the valve cover you can tell if it is hydro or mechanical.
