Big Turbo on 1.9 TD

hey guys i have a 97 jetta TD IDI with the following mods
1.6td boost pin
adjusted pump
FMIC with 2,5" piping
k24 turbo at 27 psi
2,5" downpipe
3" exhaust no cat and no mufflers
ive blown 2 k24's in the last 2 weeks, the first one lasted about 6 months and the 2nd 2 days
anyway im looking for a big turbo option that will actually run some high boosti. what are my options

nice car
you can put a Garrett VNT on it.
you need to use a manifold with a T2,... flange, but i know they exist.
There are some guys using a GT2052v, its from the vw2.5tdi, it spools up quick, i though audi80 got 170-180hp with it.
i'm making my instal right now with a GT2252v.
I dont know you can get those in US/canada, I got a GT2052v for sale in good condition :wink:

Look into either a Garrett GT25R with the smallest stock turbine housing. Or a Holset Hy-35 with an Hx-30 turbine housing, Or a K26/K24 Hybrid, Or a Switzer S-200 ect...
I also think that you just had bad luck I pushed 30-35psi, and a couple of times into the 40's (boost contorler malfunction) for well over a year, before I blew it the first time. However if you are planing on upgrading anyway get a good new turbo, I personally wouldn't waste the time figuring out the VNT control's, but if you do go right to the GT25V off of the Merc AMG Diesel. Anything less and you just have a K24 or "slightly" bigger.

can you also say why? i only see the advantage of the VNT.
Anyway, i thought you only can flow +-200hp, when you want more, there is a airflowproblem in an out the engine. (that is what 935racer said a month ago)

this is a wicked wicked ride.... even better up close (I had seen it at the london auto club show about a month or so ago)
did this car not just pull a 13 at the track down at waterfest?? or am I mistaken?

what are the optimal A/R's for the 1,9 td ? so i can take a look at my options

Use an airesearch turbo from a w123 chassis 300d, .48 turbine, 50 trim compressor. take an unreal amount of abuse and push more air than the k24, also your turbine back pressure will be greatly reduced and you will likely see a drop in oil temperature. It will spool later than the k24 though but nothing that a custom cam cant help.
Oh yeah I alos would not mess with the vnt turbos, the gt22 and smaller versions are too small to run on a 1.9, way too much drive pressure. And they don't flow that great, not that bad but not that great. They also tend to be unreliable compared to a conventional turbo. Oh and on mechanical setups you need to make a vnt actuator, which may be difficult for some people.

nope... just what I've heard.. some people at our monday night meet proclaimed "a mk3 diesel running the 1/4 in 13".....

I know of a car here in Ottawa (97 AAZ Jetta) running a GT22 hybrid (25 size internals?), he is seeing 22-24 psi and rallying the car with good results, fmic no other mods yet. I sold him some injectors from Smog and told him about the boost pin, waiting for results. He is very happy with the turbo, lots of power, more then the gear ratios were meant for...his only problem is fuel economy, dropped to 500-600kms a tank cause he loves boost!
Would you really recommend running old turbos? I thought they were out dated (Mercedes diesel ones) compared with current GT series (I know nothing on this subject yet, want input here-just going by what other say). Anyways, expect $800 for a GT turbo, otherwise lots of used junk out there but your life expectancy will vary!

I was down at waterfest on saturday and i didnt see any diesels. I was actually pretty pissed that there werent any. maybe some showed up on sunday but i didnt hear anything about it....
