Hey all i have a 1997 golf tdi 90 bhp. i have just a bought a tuning box for it but when i went to fit it ive hit probelms. Where the box is meant to plug in instead of the rectangular plugs ive got a large round plug. Im wondering if im looking in the wrong place or has the orignal plugs been changed at some stage. Also is there any way i can wire the tuning box into the plug? many thanks Andy

Pic of plug:
Um...you have a TD, not a TDI.
Um...you have a TD, not a TDI.
I concur. If that pic is of your engine, you have regular 75hp mechanical turbo diesel, tuning boxes do not apply.
Edit: On second look I don't see a turbo oil line, perhaps you have the 68hp naturally aspirated 1.9 diesel?
I hate to rain on your parade but it "is" a tdi. I am dirving a 1996 passat tdi and I have a spare 1997 passat tdi engine and both have that connection. The engine is a 1Z or similar. The look just like mech diesels except for the injectors and pump.

this is my spare tdi at fisrt glance it looks like a idi but it is a 1Z tdi.
I wasn't looking at the round connector to make my decision, I know they are the same IDI and TDI. As is the block and a number of other things.
Unless its a retrofit, it isn't a TDI. The TDI was never used with an 020 transaxle, the TDI with a manual tranny has coolant heater glow plugs in the nipple at the end of the head and there should be a bunch of intercooler piping running past the very area shown in the photo if this is a TDI.
