how many KM's or miles are you going on a tank? mine was like it was empty at 650 km, yet only took 37L to the fuel cap. I filled up and went 373 km on 25.2 L. This figures around 41 and change mpg(imperial) only thing i can think is the pickup is not sucking to the bottom. I took it out and it compresses yet you put it in the tank and it does not compress. The pickup only sucks at the bottom when its compressed right? the car is a 95 golf has 233,000km new turbo last year, new air and fuel filter when i bought it 1 month ago. no air bubbles in the line. I shift at 2200rpm or less on the highway never over 2600 rpm. It has 185/70 14's

HI
We have only had our 97 Jetta TD AAZ for about 2 months or so, but commuting in traffic my wife gets approx 900 km per tank 45 L +/-. We have not made a long road trip yet, but I think in th city we are are around 5 L / 100 km or 56 mpg (CAD Gal)
Hope this helps.

i've got an appointment wednesday at the vw only shop here in town. Going to get them to set the pump timeing. I've changed the belt with everything lined up. It starts good, pulls good, smokes black some just doesen't seem to be that great on fuel. Also when driveing it skips sometimes, but if you pull the advance handle out it cures it. Thats why i think the timeing is off.

Check the FAQ section on performance for the 1.9-get the timing set to 1.00mm and do the other things yourself, very basic stuff it will help a whole bunch, sounds like the pump might be dying if the timing is okay...

Pump timeing at 1.00mm is the best for good fuel economy? i don't really care about the power it puts out. I just want it to be what i thought i was buying "econo box"
i looked at the performance mods, the only thing i saw on improveing mileage was disconnecting that sensor. The rest seemed to be more performance. Turning up the boost, adding more fuel. i would like to do the opposite
thanks for the input

oops!
I've discovered that there is a leak somewhere in the fuel system. Last week when i tried to start it one day it fired once then quit. After it wouldn't start. It said like 1/4 of a tank, so i figured it was empty and the guage in the tank was screwed. I started it on the bottle and filled the filter then away we went. I stopped to fill up and it took only 37L?? now i know why cause it did the same thing twice yesterday and i had filled it the day before. I have an appointment tomorrow at the vw shop to set the pump timeing, i'm gonna have them pressurieze the system to find the leak.

hi,
i usually get about 825-850 per 48 liters to fill the tank
thats zeroing when i fill it to when the fuel light comes on
doesnt seem to matter too much if its hwy or city, but my best ever hwy was around 910, but i have yet to match it.
my timing is set closer to factory spec as opposed to ahead, or whatever, for max fuel economy...

At the Moment im getting only 26-27 mpg around town, which is dissapointing
Im not sure why ?
I drive alot of small distances ,which probably doesent help, also alot of the time it is barly warmed up by the time i get to my destination.
but it should be better right ?
car goes well otherwise, no problems to report.
plus on the open road im not getting much better ( about 34 mpg) at a average of say... 70 mph.
My cold start lever doesent seem to make any differance to the running of the engine,Maybe a fraction quieter when cold.
I tend to need to change gear at about 3000 rpm ,to achieve could smooth shifts, but thats only because theres no power at all untill 2000 rpm. but that shouldnt cause such poor figures.
I have carried out the FAQ mods & am running only 12 psi.
What do you think, pump timing ?

I get about 800km to a tank (55L) so there are a few things I am sure that I could do to fix it. My alingment is off, my turbo needs to be repaired and get my injection pump timing advanced.

whats up with this i thought the tank was 55L? i was down to the 2nd from last red line and it took 56.35L to fill it to the cap? am i gettin screwed at the pump from their meausurements? i know the neck holds some fuel but it wasn't empty either. Anyway i did 875km on this 56.35L.
about 60/40% city/hwy never seen 3000rpm, cruise at 2400-2600 on the highway. shift at 2000-2400rpm. no jackrabbit starts.
i just went to the shop this week and they backed the timeing to 32? said they went 2 degrees back. they put the guage on and everything, but i thought it was measured in mm
the turbo was new last year, the timeing has been set. new filters. i haven't had it aligned but it goes straight yet the wheel is cocked to the right a bit when straight. i'm runnin 28lbs air.

when is the fuel light suppose to come on?
i'm assumeing mine does not work
Thanks

all highway i got over 1300km on one tank which is around 70L or 52mpg, the passats must have a larger tank than the jettas and golfs..

I have a '97 Jetta 1.9TD. In the summer I get between 900- 1000 km to a tank (vented) - about 52-54 litres.
In the winter it drops about 100km due to winter diesel and cold starts.
The farthest I have ever went before the fuel light came on was 935 KM.
