since I am going to replace the head gastket on my pickup I was wondering if I should go all together and replace the piston rings and valves. if I am noticing the following.
1. cannot accelarate past 45km/h on certain upward slopes. lack of power?
2. smoke in the tail pipe.

I just finished diassmbling my engine head. I found a few of water passages blocked with silicon and a bit aluminum erosion probably due the orginal owner didn't use the 50/50 mixture.
here are my questions
1. do you guys use any type of adhesive to between head and gasket and block?
2. I also went to an auto supply and ask for my engines head gasket. He asked me if I wanted the asbestos type or the steel type. what is the difference I alsways there was only the steel type
any tips would be great

When I redid the head gasket on my subaru, I used spray copper gasket stuff on the head gaskets, both sides. It's supposedly for head gaskets and exhaust gaskets. I've never done the head gasket on the diesel so I'm not sure what to suggest though.
I think I'd stick with the steel head gaskets myself. Again, I haven't done diesels, but on subaru's, they had a rash of head gasket failures in the late 90's, and ended up going to an improved gasket with another steel layer to keep them from blowing out (they overbored a 2.2 liter engine to 2.5 liters and it ended up being a little too weak for one piece of the head gasket).
I spray my head gaskets with the copper spray as well, it seemed to hold up well with 25 lbs of boost at 3500 rpm on the dyno, unfortuanately the bottom end of the block halfway cracked off.
