Some older MK2s like mine have a left tie rod with no removable outer end.
The popular tools that look like a tube would require cutting off the old outer end.
Not so bad, unless something goes wrong, and then you have a car that needs to be dollied.
This tool works great, with no need to cut the rod:
Left inner end:
Bolt it on:
A long extension and stong 1/2->3/8 adapter gets it done from the wheel well:
Once loose, remove the tool and spin off the rod by hand.
A minor downside is that tightening requires clamping the tool on again (to the replacement part). Also odd that it has the fitting for the 3/8 socket drive, but it still works well.
Costs about $16 on Amazon, $20 at the local parts stores.
