Does the 86 golf have the fast or slow glow plugs and relay? Plugs seem to work jumping from the battery to start it but nothing is going to the plugs. Local auto parts start can't cross numbers as they only have one and they can't say if that is fast or slow.

im 100% sure all were fast glow by that time. the store most likely has a fast glow there, although for the price it prob. makes sense to be sure. before you replace the relay, which may be the cause (of problem), check the big fusible link, it may be on the firewall, or i do believe on mine (an '86 also), it may have been on relay board/or fuse box, kind of up under -by--steering column,. another thing,, draining water out of water separator, yes by rear fuel tank, you can 'trip on' glow plug.

two things you can do. 1,the plugs on relay from slow to fast are bound to be different, take your current relay to store, line up the plugs, if they line up, thats your part.am i correct? 2nd to do, take the part# (of part autoparts store has) look up an autoparts online website, check for a autoparts website that cross references part#'s, put part# in and see if cross reference matches.
another thing you can do i buy lots of parts from napa, check for their prices, glowplugs, related parts, like relays, etc. not
all napa dealers are made equal, i know of at least two i personally avoid. 1 has an adjoining shop, i had a bad experience with their management and wont go back there.
