Anyone ever try installing this M&H dynamic timing advance spacer on there VE pump?

Like the title says, curious if it's ever been done on our VW pumps, it's for the Cummins VE pumps. Any pros or cons you can forsee? Just happened to stumble upon it and started thinking.

I thought about it for sure - on the IDI pumps you can get basically the same effect from just putting a DI timing cap on (though you'd still need a suitable shim). They have an LDA cap spacer that looks interesting too...

Thanks for posting. I have cut the dynamic advance piston shorter before. This looks like a good alternative. Yes, you would need a shim of the same thickness to go under the spring to keep the advance curve the same at lower rpms. The listing says it comes with a shim, though.

I don't see how the LDA spacer would help anything since the little pin rides all the way to the top of my fuel pin anyways.
Is the timing advance worth it?

How do they drive after this mod? Any noticeable improvement?

The LDA spacer allows a greater range of motion to the boost pin. If you have a stock pump it does not ride the entire length of the taper on the boost pin. Instead of adding an LDA shim I have removed material inside the cover to get the full range of motion.
As far as the dynamic advance goes, I have found that afterwards, the engine smoked less at higher rpms when I had my foot in it. As far as power improvement I can't say for sure as it wasn't a controlled test.

The reason I wasn't thinking the spacer would work is because I have my preload (very top screw on LDA) screwed almost all the way in so the small pin still rides all the way to the top of the fuel pin. I can even see the marks riding up and down on it to prove it.
Ok, I'm kind of tempted on trying it just to see. Don't know the price yet though.
Wonder if it will lower EGT's up higher in the rpm range since it's a cleaner burn?

The pin preload should be adjusted by rotating the star wheel not the top pin seat screw. For easy access to the star wheel, remove the atmospheric bleed filter.

I forgot, I have adjusted the star wheel and also took out the nylon washer that was under the LDA spring. That's how I can get full pin travel.
I even read that Cummins fuel pin works in the VW. It seems to me that the aftermarket Cummins pins are cut too deep. The little pin that the fuel pin rides on only protrudes so far at full throttle (unless it protrudes more when the engine is running). I ground my fuel pin as deep as the small pin protrudes. Maybe I'm just getting carried away on thinking stuff haha

M&H inc. has been working on getting more involved with the vw pumps recently. I've got a modded pump from them that is wicked! I'll be doing a write up very soon on what they will be putting together for our pumps. My eco is a blast after their pump went in. The pump pushes way more fuel than my k24 can handle. I have it turned down so I'm not smoking out my block.

Well that just got me pretty excited haha. I have an Ecodiesel also, I assume they modded a regular TD pump with LDA right?

You got it. I pulled the head last year and bought a td pump to replace the eco pump, put in head studs and traded my k14 for a k24 from another member here. I then called m&h to see about the timing advance spacer for this pump (I already have their setup on my 1st gen cummins motor). They offered to let me try out their mods on my inj pump if I was willing to send it up to them, and I gladly accepted. I'm going to do a good write up on what they will offer for our setups within a week or so. I want to talk with them and make sure all my facts on the mods are correct and such. I'm super excited to get my eco back up and running and what a difference from the original setup. wahooo!!

That's awesome! I still have the stock K14, how does the K24 spool compared to it? I was looking up K24s yesterday.
I emailed them a while after I started this thread and they said it wouldn't work with my pump so I kinda gave up on the thought.

it sounds like they don't know what they're talking about, k24 would work with any vw diesel pump. although if you have no turbo and you're going to one of the stock vw turbos, i think id recommend the t3 for power, but one of the 2 k14's for spool up.

Are these parts to buy to hop up your own pump or a send it to them deal kind of like Giles?
