What RPM are you N/A guys running? i've adjusted mine a few times but only by ear (i JUST put in a gauge cluster with a tach [thanks andy, it works rly well])

My engine is a little over 1000 rpm once the engine is warmed up and the cold start handle pushed in. With the handle pulled out it goes up to about 1400 rpm. I usually leave the handle pulled out, the car is so much faster like that, unless the car is stopped like at a red light. My car is a 94 Golf with a 1.9TD, but it shouldn't really matter if the motor is N/A or TD.

900. I find if I leave the cold start lever out, it is more powerful, but my fuel mileage goes down quite dramatically (from 50mpg to 40mpg)
Mine is set at 900-950rpm hot. Anything lower starts to get shakey. Fast idle is set at 1100rpm. Car is a 97 1.9TD.
Hey Im running just over 1000rpm when engine is warm but I do not notice any increase in engine speed from the cold start lever unless the engine is cold (even so not much rpm increase but engine runs smoother). Iv read somewhere that the lever is supposed to retract itself once the car is warm thats why I thought my rpm's should not increase if I pull it once the car is warm. Does this mean my cold start cable needs adjustment? :roll:

Usually a little bit under 1000rpm at hot idle on my 1.6lTD here too... about 950-980 RPM. I would set it as low as you could while being able to live with the shakes. I think bentley specifies pretty low idle RPMs (850-900'ish? at least for an A1 1.5/1.6lTD...)
The idle-rpm bump feature tied to the timing advance knob found in the later model TDs is really nice, although I don't have it on my '84 TD motor. It should allow you to get away with a lower hot-idle RPM, since the motor idles smoother when hot and also the speed naturally increases when hot a little bit too.
After cold starting, on my A1 non-idle increasing injection pump, I usually just nurse the throttle for about a minute or so before the engine becomes a little bit warmer and idles smoother, to avoid excessive shaking.
Oh yeah, a bad glow plug, or 2, can make the engine shake a whole lot after a cold start. When you've got all 4 cylinders firing after a cold start like you can achieve when everything is working properly, it idles a lot smoother after a cold start. Motor mounts can also be a factor in idle roughness. I think A2s (or A3s) are a smoother idlers than A1s due to the added isolation of the engine being mounted to a subframe.
Edit: I also don't know if 1.9's need higher idle RPMs than 1.6's... what does the bentley manual say?
1100 seems bout right. but WA emissions requires 800 or below, so I had to tweak down last week on 'the wife's jetta' It sounds terrible now, and pretty tough on loosening things up.
