Hey guys so I'm starting to get tired of the shift linkage in my aaz as it just keeps breaking due to I'm guessing my short shift kit. So my question to you guys is what transmission do I want? I know its a mk3 TDI one but I have no idea the code. Also where would I locate a short shift kit for one of those I was looking online and had no luck. Also what clutch would you recommend any help is appreciated thanks guys
02A or 02J are the trans families you want. The TDI codes of those I don't know off the top of my head. You want a solid flywheel, you do not want a dual mass.
http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=76_102&products_id=863 is an example of what would work for either of the trans families. Along with that are the fork and slave cylinder and some other bits to make it a hydraulic clutch setup. I would guess you will have around 2,000 dollars in doing this if you have to buy the trans in good shape and do all the work yourself. CV's should be different but I do not know for sure. The mounts will be different from your 020 so you will have to figure something for that as well. You maybe able to do it cheaper if you find used parts like the flywheel and such.
missinglinkz has a solid 020 short shift kit that should never be broken as it replaces all the plastic pieces for under 200?
CV joints are the same at least in the Mk3 platform.
A CTN code 02A is pretty much the bees knees - best highway gearing of any of the TDI transmissions. They were found in late 90s Passats.
From what I gather the 02J shift tower is the way to go. Many more affordable options and can be put on the 02A easily.

I have that stuff.
I replaced all 3 links with solid, put UHMW bushings on the relay shaft, new delrin ball on the relay lever, and the bolt-on short shift too for about $100.
Seems solid to me. Requires some dialing in of the ball joint ends because they are threaded on.
I haven't driven with it yet, but they seem good quality to me.
Can't imagine what you'd have to do to break them. My fear is whether i can keep the short shift kit with my turbo. We'll have to see what the muffler guy can fabricate.
An 02J conversion is the best solution but costs 10x as much as missinglinkz.
fwiw here's a list of VW transmission codes and gear ratios:
