For sale is my beloved 1986 Volkswagen Jetta Turbo Diesel GTD. I have owned this car for about 1.5 years, and in that time I have done some serious maintenance. I planned on driving it for another 200,000 miles, but I got a great deal on a 2002 Jetta TDI and I've got to sell this very fun and reliable car. I'm asking $2500 obo because of the amount of new parts, and aftermarket parts installed on the car.
I recently moved here from Louisiana, and this car made the 2 day drive with zero problems! I averaged 46-47 mpg on that trip (all highway going 60mph) I get about 35mpg in town with a heavy foot. Drive it slow and get 38mpg city.
This has the 1.6TD engine -considered one of the most reliable engines volkswagen ever made, with some cars getting over 500,000 miles from the original engine. It's a 5-speed manual. Power steering. Foha spolier. It's got some quirks due to it's age, but starts and runs great. Transmission shifts great. Very little rust. Low mileage for it's age. I always put a small amount of marvel mystery oil in every tank -this helps to lubricate the injection pump on older diesels. I've replaced so many parts that I'm probably forgetting some, but here is my list... I can provide receipts for everything.
Under the hood:
Rebuilt injection pump 6 months ago, replaced all seals (have photo proof) did "governor mod."
New fuel hoses and bosch fuel filter.
New timing belt + pulleys @ 174,000 miles.
Turbo in great shape with no shaft play.
New Behr radiator, hoses, coolant tank -flushed and filled with Sierra low-tox coolant.
All new engine mounts (3) - made the car smooth and quiet.
USRT shift linkage kit (very solid shifting, won't wear out.)
New clutch cable.
Upgraded glow plug wiring + relay + new Bosch duraterm glow plugs.
Battery 1 year old.
Oil changed every 5000 miles with Shell Rotella T 10w-40.
Suspension:
H&R cup kit - H&R springs, front H&R shocks, rear shocks are bilstein HD sport.
Upper Strut mounts replaced with VR6 HD rubber mounts.
Lower control arm bushings replaced with R32 solid rubber bushings.
Rear upper shock bushings are polyurethane.
New ball joints.
New rear wheel bearings.
Rear brake job done about a year ago. New drums, pads, hardware, slave cylinders.
Other stuff:
Has no A/C -Heater works.
All lights, blinkers -everything works.
Headlight switch is new.
Oil pressure switch is new.
Brake light switch is new.
Body & Interior:
Dash is in great condition - no cracks!
Front seats are in good shape for their age.
Rear seats are from a mk3 jetta and are in nice shape.
Momo leather shift knob.
All glass good with no cracks.
I restored the black moulding with a heat gun.
Paint is in decent condition.
A few dents and scratches -Front driver's side fender is the worst, but no underlying damage to the chassis.
Made new "vapor barriers" for all doors.
Tires:
All 4 have plenty of tread left.
Full sized spare in the trunk.
Bad things:
Sunroof has a minor leak. It won't leak at all in minor rain, but will during a heavy downpour. I bought a new $75 seal for it -it helped, but still has a slight leak. It's possible I didn't adjust the sunroof properly when I reinstalled it, but I resorted to taping it shut, and haven't messed with it since.
One rust spot around the front windshield and one spot near the back glass.
Trunk seal needs to be replaced. Slight leak on passenger side in really heavy rain -no rust in trunk.
No headliner.
Needs door panels. Front door panels are home made.
Power steering rack has a slow leak - I add fluid about once a month.
Has very slow oil seepage from the valve cover - the gasket is a new 1-piece rubber gasket, but still did not completely stop the leak. This is a common problem on these engines.
Currently has an awesome Alpine stereo system and a 10" JL sub, which is NOT included in the price. If you are interested in all or part of the stereo we can negotiate a price.
The car is currently parked in Colorado Springs, but I'm moving to Denver in 2 weeks, and will drive the car up there then if it hasn't sold.
Extra parts (not installed):
Factory service manual
Tie Rods - inner & outer.
Front wheel bearings (old ones are fine, accidentally purchased)
Power Steering reservoir.
Front brake pads (old ones are fine)
