I just wanted to make a note, that if you use a 97 (b3-is that correct?) to change into a 02A into a MK3 you don't have to use the passat petals as the clip hole is already there on the plastic Mk3 clutch pedal. However, the passat hydraulic master cylinder clutch shaft is about 5/8" (roughly) shorter than the MK3 master cylinder is. So you either have to lengthen the passat one (didn't want to chance I didn't get it right) or get a proper new/used MK3 master cylinder.
I have used a MK4 golf master cylinder is my other car MK3. In that case the shaft is a bit too long by about the same amount. I just made a spacer and was able to use it and the Mk4 slave cylinder. (much easier to remove line in Mk4 if you need to).
Thought I'd mention as well, all MK3 golfs already have the holes in the firewall for the master cylinder bore and bolt locations.
Life is so much easier if you get a new Mk3 master cylinder. Honestly you should replace both the master and slave together as a pair - when you swap them to a different vehicle chances are the piston seals won't be sitting in the same place in the bore. Once you use everything for a while the seals end up trashed because now they are riding over the transition from the worn in area to the unworn part of the cylinder that the piston never moved to before.
You can buy both cylinders new for about $150 or so - cheap insurance really.
Oh the support bracket for the master cylinder is still available through the dealership too. Get it or your firewall is going to bow out over time.
I kept the setup the passat had for mounting the master cylinder, so it should be okay so the bowing doesn't happen. I have a new master cyinder that I should get today and I will order a new slave cause that's the hard one to change after everything is back together.
