hey,
i was wondering if a mechanical TDI pump like the one caddy built would work on one of our engines. I realize the injectors would have to be rebuilt with a higher breaking pressure but my question is would there be any advantage from the higher pressure?
Increasing the rate of injection would be a good thing. You want the fuel to get into the combustion chamber quickly, that would allow you to run more fuel while maintaining combustion efficiency, I think. No one has tried a TDI camplate setup in an IDI motor that I know of.
Potential issues I can think of would be increased strain through the timing belt and camplate-float at high rpm. With a TDI pump setup, you would have drastically more max fueling rate.
it'd probably work if you used AAZ two spring injectors to soften the combustion a tad...
i never try tdi came plate on idi.
i would but i could't! i sell the car before!
when i built me first pump for my 89 1.6td golf, it was a 1.6td pump with a tdi hydrolique head, plunger and came plate. the idi came plate is not compatible with the tdi plunger.
that's all i know about this setup!
Marc (Redrotors) has tried this. I heard that didn't work very well. The TDI camplate injects all of the fuel within 30-35º crankshaft. The IDI engine prefers a 35-45º injection window. From what I understand, the TDI camplate will give you an engine that is extremely loud, smokes heavily and is not very eager to rev. Marc may be able to further elaborate.
I wanted to try the TDI head as a method of getting a 10 or 11mm plunger but Marc informed my of the incompatiblity of the TDI head with the IDI camplate. I still wonder if the larger head could be adapted. Anybody got any side by side pics of the TDI/IDI plungers?

if it is just a timming story, you can make a special static timming!
today i open the pump of my 2.5 tdi engine and i'm very surprise : there is a 11mm plunger(of course) and the profil of came plate look same an a idi engine! not strong as the 1.9 tdi!!
other surprise: the pump can't be moved to tune the timing!!
i have to make a search about the 150 hp 2.5 tdi 5 cyl's pump, to see if the came plate is the same, and is the spring is same too!
i realy need bosch esi!!
Well, i tried an TDI camplate in an IDI pump and let me tell you that the engine sound awful, bad idle, smokey and not much power. so it's a mod that i recommend.
Bruce : If you have the late 1.9 IDI pump, with the slotted pulley for the timing ajust, instead of moving the pump, you'r in business. The plunger fit perfectly in the IDI camplate.. I think that bosch number of the 'good pump' is NR 0460 494 473 or 373, i can't remember. My friend installed an 10mm from a TDI in his 1.9 IDI pump, with 18psi of boost, there's almost no smoke and it pull like a train..
Cheers,
Marc/

Your 5 cyl camplate will fit in your pump, but it won't work.. a 5cyl camplate got 5 hills instead of 4 for your 1.9TDI.. I don't want to ear the engine..

don't worry marc!

i'm not silly, i'm on a new project!
i buy an eurovan ( t4 ) and it is originaly fited with a 2.4d 5 cyl ( but blwed...).
then for more power , i just found a 2.5 tdi 102 cv who is a 5 cyl too! and it's for this engine who i want to know if it have or not the same came plate as the 150 hp!
i have to make other post!

Marc: what static timing setting did you try this with, and did you experiment with trying different static timing settings before concluding the camplate was not beneficial? Also, did you use IDI delivery valves? Just curious... thanks for the info.
