I just bought a beautiful 1981 Caddy with a rebuilt 1.6 TD from a 1984 Jetta in it (mechanical lifter engine). This engine will be running synthetic oil.
Two issues that may arise is that it has the original NA diesel radiator in it (new) with a single fan (see below) and a turbo downpipe adapted to the NA exhaust system. Is this going to be a problem? Remember that I am in Canada, the truck has no AC.
If it is a problem, what radiator will fit easily without modifying the truck?

My radiator has only one fan too :!: Isn't it supposed to be like that in every engine?

You should be OK.
Opening up the exhaust system will help,by reducing EGT's,and getting the heat out,so the cooling system doesn't have to work as hard. This can be a big help when running hard, and can drop max operating temps dramatically.

the fan cowl is the same on the NA, TD and GTD models - though there are some variations with models intended market area and if air con was fitted.
I believe the A1 GTI gasser uses the same cowl.
The TDs rad is slightly wider than the NA version but I've not heard any complaints running an NA rad with a turbo. We are not in the hottest of climates in the UK though..

I'll say that is clean! Wow! Let's see some more pics. The A1 and A2 td all only had one rad fan. Just make sure the thermo switch etc are functioning properly, cooling flush and G11 coolant

You really don't want that truck at all, do you? You could just ship it down here where I'll make sure to get rid of it for you.

Wow...impressive looking truck. Super clean and very classy. I dig the steering wheel center as well. I run the same type of steering wheel (A1 GTI). Anyone got a line on one of those?
About the cooling... I have the NA radiator in my caddy TD. The TD radiator was bashed when I got it, so I transferred the fan/shroud over to the NA setup. I believe I had to change some brackets over, but can't recall what exactly. Regardless, it cools just fine.
The TD fan is three blade as opposed to four on the NA and the TD has provisions for two fan speeds. I had to do some wiring and make a special plug for the fan connection when I wired mine in. Works fine though.

I think if you adapt a 2 speed thermoswitch to the 2 speed fan shown in the picture you'll be fine.
PS. nice truck

That truck is so beautiful it makes me want to cry. :|
Anyway, I thought the dual-speed fan was for cars with A/C regardless of whether they were TD or NA.

Still should be easy to find and wire one.
