I have a SB GTD engine that I have installed into my 82 Jetta. While I have been able to find some information online, I have not been able to find the injection timing specification and a bit of other information. Anyone out there have a GTD manual from 92-93 that you can scan the engine section for me? I would be very grateful. Let me know. dieseltdi at verizon dot net
Is the car running? Any reason to doubt current timing??
Standard timing in the .90-1.00mm should work fine.
Engine runs fine at idle and I can rev the engine pretty high and produce about 8 psi just sitting still. WHen I put the new timing belt on, I am pretty sure I set it a 1.00. It is a bit sluggish to start so I may not have the timing exactly right. I was just hoping to get some specific information on this engine. I have looked at multiple websites but can't seem to find much. Hayden
When you say, sluggish to start.. do you mean to fire-off? Or to get going whilst driving??
If it is hard to start, and smokes white when it does then you are likely too far advanced. If it smokes darker or greyish then you are likely too retarded. What does pulling hte cold start handle do to starting behaviorism?
Takes a bit of cranking to fire off even with the advance pulled out. It always starts with virtually no smoke but it just takes longer than I think it should. However, my daily driven car is a TDI so I may just be spoiled to the short starting time. I would still love to find some real written information on this engine. Hayden

you do let the glow plugs warm up before you try starting it, right?

Are you using the "fast" glow plugs? VW switched from a ~30 second system to a 7 second system in the early 80s. The fast plugs require a "fast" relay. Are you using Bosch Duratherms and are all the connections good and clean?
