was just browsing the racor website, and i noticed that they have a replacement newer style mk2/3 fuel filter..
its part number 045-RAC-351.. its a direct bolt on upgrade for mk2/3 cars, and im sure it could be used on mk1s, and earlier TDIs as well..
http://www.maesco.com/catalog/product.php?productid=16198please ignore the price on maesco's webpage, they are much cheaper than that, unless of course, you order it from maesco's page..
these are the filters specs's stolen directly from Parker/Racors webpage..
"045-RAC-351 FUEL FILTER/WATER SEPARATOR
The 045-RAC-351 fuel filter/water separator is assembled with our legendary 10 micron Aquabloc®II media, a plated steel housing, a vent plug, and a lateral drain. This filter is designed to be installed on the suction (or vacuum) side of the fuel system with a maximum flow rate of 35 GPH (132 LPH) with diesel fuel and 45 GPH (170 LPH) with gasoline. This fuel filter assembly is extremely effective in removing better than 93% of free water normally found in fuel due to condensation and removes 95% of particulate matter down to 10 micron (nominal). Typical applications for the 045-RAC-351 include: generator sets, agriculture equipment, construction equipment, or any engine up to 220 HP."

I'm wondering the service life of a 10 micron filter, if used as the primary filter? This may be better suited as a secondary, but there's another thread with a spin on filter with a 2 micron rating.
What's the factory filter rated at... 20 micron?

15 micron is what comes stock on them, but there is no drain, and im sure they dont have water-block filter media.. (the filter physically wont let water thru it)
10 microns shouldnt be TOO BAD, provided you keep your fuel, and fuel system clean..
im the one with a stock 15 micron, running it into a Racor 2 micron filter btw.. werks great!
My B4 TDI has a water drain, but I like the fact that water can't pass.
I'm curious what happens to the water in the fuel if the filter's water capacity is filled?
