Given the popluatity of B3 Passats over here I thought I'd better hop on the bandwagon. As some of you may recall, my mom's mk1 Jetta was rear ended a few months ago. The rear door no longer opens and she now feels that the car is unsafe. I've found a 16v Passat auto and want to do a heart transplant. Before I pull the trigger and buy the car I'd just like some confirmation that my crazy ideas will work. I've never done a gas to diesel swap before, only read about how simple they are.
Ideally, I want to drop the 1.6 into the Passat and keep the 4 speed auto. I've heard of someone doing this before and while I didn't get enough details it seems that the only input that the tranny needs from the engine is the throttle position. I plan on leaving the throttle body hooked up to the throttle pedal and just sticking it in the raintray or something like that. Does anyone have anymore info on any inputs that the tranny will need? If I remember correctly the tranny has it's own ECU right? Under the drivers side rear seat?
The 4 speed will bolt up to the 1.6 right? Everything in my brain says yes but just thought I should check.
As far as the tank goes, the car comes with a spare diesel tank from a Passat. I'll swap that over just so I don't have to fiddle around with hammering out the restrictor in the gas one. I want to use the sending unit and intank pump from the gasser. It will drop right in right?
Now, assuming I can't get the 4 speed to work and I have to go back to the 3 speed, can I just swap the mk2 auto mount onto the mk1 tranny and will that allow me to bolt it up to the B3 motor mount? How about axle flanges. Can they be swapped over as easily as on the 020s? I'm assuming that the 16v auto uses 100mm flanges. Can anyone confirm? If I can't swap the pieces over on the tranny, can I swap the axle ends from my mk1 axles to the B3 axles?
I know it will be slow, if I have to I'll swap in a turbo. Don't ask about why the auto, my mom highly requests it. -

it may need an rpm signal, but thats easy enough to add in, especially if you used the dakota digital thing, then you could almost tune in the shift points to a certain degree, i'm watching, hopefully u can use the 4 speed that'd be pretty nice, but only if you had a turbo haha. all the 4 cylinder bell housings are the same so it will bolt together.

you dont want anything to do with the gasser in-tank pump..
those things give HEAD ACHES!! trust me. i finally took the one out of my Jetta, and threw it away.. my lift pump is a shaker fuel pump, and my pickup tube is a chunk of tygon.. -

well, i had 2 in tank pumps FAIL on me in short order.. when they quit pumping, no matter how much fuel you have in your tank, they LEAK AIR. they leak soo much air that there is NO WAY for the engine to run without the pump running as well. there are 2 small holes in the tank pump. one on the bottom, and one on top. they are cooling holes or something. they PISS when you power the pump up. and when you take power away, but the engine is still running, they are HUGE AIR LEAKS.
the trans needs a throttle position, and an RPM signal. there was a guy that did a conversion in an audi recently, he rigged up some sort of RPM signal off the cam sprocket.. it was a bit ghetto fabbed tho, i know you can do better..
as for an 096 starter, im not aware of a diesel model? -

Looks good. At least you have it running.
I just got the car here yesterday. The engine blew up while the guy was delivering it. Silly 16vs. It puked oil out and also the timing belt went. Not sure exactly what oil but it's dripping but both the engine and PS still have fluid in them. Oh well.
I'm still on the fence as to what tranny to use. Neither is completely a bolt in...
I've heard that the 096 autobox starter will also work on a 02a, and if that's the case then there exists a diesel starter for it. Can anyone confirm or deny? -

you mean 020... 02a nope..
also needs to be td... and going to be freeken slow... my 1.6td 5 speed 020 b3 probally pushes things... on road no issue... around say nj on fri night at 5pmish 10 min away from nyc... really hard to pull out... from dead stop wondering if your going to get hit or not... auto na... way worse.. -

I'm thinking about turboing it. Probably will be an afterthought though. Definitely going to get a GTI 4:2:1 header on the exhaust while it's out. Traffic isn't that bad around here -

stock passat auto uses a 020 starter... 02a like tdi aka cable shift is different.. much like trying to use a 020 on a 02a.. does not work..

Ok, so for a tach signal, would I need something like this device http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=128/category_id=287/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd128.htm and then just hook the wires up to the coil wires or how does that work? Is there a way to use a stock diesel tach that uses the W terminal? -

Since u need a good signal for the trans computer I would def use the Dakota digital converter
