Hey guys I have a 90' 1.6 N/A just a though of what you guys think if I would add 17" vw mags. Would I be putting extra stress on any of the power train components. Thanks.
deflate the air in your tires to say 5psi each.. go for a spin... now imagine completly flat, adding a tow bar to it.. a car.. and think of the acceleration you will have... 17s are about the same on a 1.6na...
NO!!! dont do it, you will regret it big time!
you DO NOT want 17" wheels on your n/a.. it probably wouldnt even do 60mph with them installed..
with a car that under-powered, you notice every spec of power you lose..
how CRSMP5 explained it, is about dead on.. let the air out of your tires and go for a drive..
i had a set of 17" wheels on my rabbit for less than 2.5 miles.. i installed them, drove around the loop my house is on, drove it back in the shop, and took them back off. my car even has a turbo, and it still severely affected my acceleration. i was much happier with my acceleration with the 13" stock vw steelies..
if you want to UPGRADE your wheels, get a set of 13, or 14" alloy wheels, and install those..
big wheels are HEAVY..
and where would you find a set of VW oem mags that are 4x100 bolt pattern?
same thing goes for heavy 15s... i have a set of atp spa wheels new i got in 98.. put them on gasser to help with wheel spin... in 92ish i tried them on my b3 td sedan... not good.. my porsche phone dials.. they great on my b3.. better on my kubvan.. but hell by the time you buy adapters and such.. may as well buy new from tire rack..
id look for a set of 14" lacastlet wheels.. stock alloy for b3 16v passats.. also used on some carat jetta and cabbies.. they light.. strong.. and can be polished to mirror finish
I just came up with these in the Portland CL of the day.
