I have had this car since 2006 and the Bentley almost as long. Second page says 11th digit is where it was made, and mine is W, germany. I was working on the air filter box and found this stamp on it Hecho in Mexico. What do you guys think?

Either that or the car cracked it's airbox in the past and had a replacement part from mexico put on it. I've put plenty of parts like that on at my job in the dealership. Hell, it's gotten so big that each part has to have a stamped 3-letter manufacturer
code on it that we have to document for QC issues when doing warranty work! It's kinda annoying.
So uh, yeah, it could be that too. Pardon the rambling. What I'm trying to say is that you should allways rely on the VIN to determine where your vehicle was manufactured and assembled. In the end, it's all about the base body.

my mexican jetta had lots of german and american parts..
the VIN is what denotes country of origin.. not the air box..
that simply means that the air box was made in mexico, and shipped to germany, and installed in your car.

8 V thanks for the decoder ring. Mine was built in Portugal in 81. And is designated the low power option. N/A sans turbo I guess.

so, it was a 3VW car?
it said my 86 GTI was built in portugal too, but if you read the quotes next to it, it says any car before 1988 was manufactured in Westmoreland PA..

Note that this is the frame/ fender not the airbox. The picture shows a hole in the upper right that is for the airbox to anchor into underneath the cone filter that I have since removed.

like i say, that piece was probably manufactured in mexico..
i think they stamped the metal pieces in one country, and assembled them in another..

where did you get Westmoreland, PORTUGAL out of anything that i said?
i did mention the 2 different places in one post, but not as the same location.. i dont get it.
and i asked if it was a portugal car because 3VW cars were built in mex/brazil/portugal.

Mine has the same thing and it was from their PA plant, though my guess is that it was only assembled there and that most of the parts came from somewhere else (Mexico, Brasil, Canada, Germany).
I think that stamp only refers to that piece of sheet metal.

ROR my bad I should have typed Westmoreland, PArtugal. Then maybe you would have known I was pulling on your leg. I had the screen set in a way that I really couldn't see the whole summary box and didn't note the footnote.
Good to know it was built in the USA, providing working mans wages to someone struggling against the daily grind.
