What's Up, Doc?

So here's the deal.
I've been on this forum now for a bunch of years. Over that time, one thing I've always loved is that we have a good, chill atmosphere. People don't jump on one another, and we have lots of good frank technical discussions. Nobody was trying to waggle their junk in front of one another, and we had lots of good discussions about making IDI diesels into the best performers possible.
Lately it seems there's been a change of tone. I don't know where it's come from or whatever, but the bickering b*******t between folks has no place here. I'm all about talking about technical details about these engines up down seven ways to sideways, but frankly I have no time for folks trying to waggle whatever in front of whoever. I'm here to learn, because everything that I've put in to Jezebel has come from precisely two places on the Internet, here and the "other forum".
So everyone, think about what you're posting, and if you really think it advances all of our knowledge. If you can't seriously put your hand on your heart and say you're doing better for everyone by what you're writing then I really don't want to read it.

Well said vanbc. I've noticed quite a bit of negativity also. You know what they say--arguing on the internet is like.............won't say it, lets all just try to help one another and ignore any personal threats

I will admit, I have personally said some things to some people.. but only after the rooster fight had been started. True pouring gasoline on ones fire does not help extinguish it, unfortunately.
But I do agree, every morsel of diesel knowledge I posses came from this site, and my mk1 knowledge from the Vortex. With all the threads being filled up with useless banter anyone that is new and is trying to learn from us, will look at it and pass on by.. because they too do not want to read threads filled with useless b.s.
I think I'd just like to put something out there.. Whatever it is your doing, your not the only one doing it. However it is you've done it, you have not figured out the only way. Share your knowledge and provide polite corrective criticism. Take a step back and think if you yourself were trying to learn something and you took a shot at it. You did it wrong because you are under educated. Would you really want someone to tell you how stupid you are? And how wrong the way you did what did was?
Time to grow up people, I'm pretty sure we're all over atleast 20.. guess what? That makes us adults. Act like it.

Vanbc, I think you should step up and be a mod as the rest of the mods seem to be vacant.
we need mods.. i think they should pick a few of the senior users, and make them mods..

From lurking here for some time, vanbcguy, rabbitman are the only current frequent posters that that come to mind who have shown anywhere near the level headedness and maturity necessary to be a mod. I could make a decent list of the current frequent users who would be disastrous as moderators. I've only stepped out of lurking because I've gotten tired of seeing the increased density of BS and jerky comments that are being spewed. I think registration needs to be opened and new blood allowed in here or this forum will slowly die as more and more of the intelligent and decent posters can't stomach it any more leave.
thats how its going. im about done here. im tired of all the drama. i know, i contribute to it sometimes, but still, theres always drama, even when im not around, or have nothing to do with it..
i find myself spending more time on vortex lately.
and usually, i dont make an ass out of myself unless provoked.. and name calling provokes me nicely.. thats how it happened yesterday, and from the lack of logical reasoning..

And on the flipside are folks that don't get the answer they're fishing for and want to debate the answer they do get... or guys that try to outsmart the engineers in every way possible in an effort to cut corners or be cheap... or under the veil of internet anonymity people can post all kinds of anecdotes and one-time anomalies that they feel disprove established knowledge and never have to take responsibility for their 'data'.

i feel that the arguement against ACN, or any high geared trannies, not working good in a VW diesel, kinda has a pointless foundation tho.. thats all.. ACN trannies work beautifully behind turbo diesels.
i mean, come on, a 4A trans came stock behind a 84 n/a... it has 3.94's and a .70 4th.. in 4th gear, its ratios are almost identical to an ACN in 5th..
theres 5 RPMS difference!!! @ 60mph..
and a 4A was a stock diesel trans!!!
so, with that kinda logical thinking, then an ACN trans will never work with a diesel.. those 5 rpms less are going to break the camels back for sure!!
(see how logical that sounds?!)

Lol...
I don't know dirt about tranny ratios. I have an FF... and tend to skip discussions about which I'm not familiar or not interested, so I missed this trans argument.
In other words, this isn't what I was griping about in my prior post.

I do think we need a bit more active moderation than we've had lately. If I go back and read posts from 2005-2006 or so, it's amazing the difference in tone and experience that was being shared. I think folks get frustrated and just stop posting when things are getting off topic and personal all the time.
I hate seeing folks disappear who were otherwise good resources. Lots of intent gets lost in text, so sometimes I do think things come across the wrong way causing "personal" disputes that probably wouldn't happen if we were all sitting around together in a garage with a beer in person. Once people start rubbing each other the wrong way it gets easy to be a dick whenever folks see posts from a person they've decided they're annoyed by. But I think if we all actually want things to progress in a positive way we all need to stop, take a deep breath and realize there's nothing to be "won" in an argument here. I mean it's not like you're going to go out the next day and tell all your real life buddies how awesome you are because you out-typed some guy on a VW diesel forum out there on the interwebz.
Just looking through our mod's latest postings, it seems that burn is the only one still frequenting the IDI forum much. I expect we probably could do with a few more moderators who are actively running IDIs. Not sure who controls that or whatever these days.

I have gotten upset on here. Not because of people that post dumb stuff, but because of the lack of moderation to the dumb stuff. IMHO Vince went a little overboard, but right now that would be welcomed by me as opposed to what we have now. I was threatened to be banned and it was my fault. I usually don't get too crazy, but I still revert to my old nature from time to time. Please forgive me those who saw what I am explaining as I should have been more tasteful. I took a week off and emailed tyler a bunch asking if he could turn the place around and he doesn't have the time. In the week I took off as well I thought and came up with a solution for myself. I am now ignoring posts that are what I think are dumb. I started posting again trying to help people, as I haven't been for a while. I remembered something I did long ago when first saved which is no matter what others do only I can control what I do. Works in life and is working for me here.
All that said I still wish we had an ignore user button

I know what you all mean about him taking things a bit too seriously at times, but think about it - Let those little things slip and it just begins to snowball.. Not to mention that when he did warn someone about something that didn't seem like a big deal it made the rest of us step back to make sure we were all in check..
I too miss Vince.. He always seemed to chime in at just the right time.. I'm glad though that he still seems to be doing well and continues on with his own ventures..
When Tyler (aka burnyourmoney) had the time he also did a great job at keeping things in line around here
Hopefully we can get someone that has the time and energy to keep this rowdy bunch in check.. From what I can imagine it is quite the full time job in itself...
In the interim maybe we should all follow Lucas's plan-
I am now ignoring posts that are what I think are dumb.
Instead we can tackle those posts from those that may not be as in the know as the rest of us.. Kinda sad when I get the chance to check in here and see a simple question with no responses in several days.. I know a lot of those simple questions can be answered with the search function, but as we all know sometimes it returns a bunch of crap to wade though if one doesn't use the exact proper words.. At least a suggestion of what to search for, or better yet a link to the info would be far much more helpfull than "use the search function"...
Just my 2.5 cents....

those of us with the time to mod full time here, may not be suited very well for the job..
