Hi Guys,
I'm looking for your advise, with the latest project I'm working on.
I recently purchased an 88 Fox wagon, which has a 1.6TD from an 85 Quantum installed.
I purchased this car as an incomplete project.
The 1.6TD has a Garrett turbo, with quite a bit of play in the shaft and while reading the former owners build thread on the vortex "north americas first Fox turbo diesel"He mentions that a lot of oil poured out of the turbo, when he removed it.
I'm trying to decide,if I should rebuild the Garrett,or replace it with a different turbo.
The engine isn't running yet,as I'm still gathering the necessary parts to complete the install.
I remember reading on this site, that the garrett was slow to spool up,but makes good boost.
This car will be my daily driver and definately NOT a hot Rod.
I'm thinking ,that maybe a smaller turbo, might be better for a daily driver-which will probably never spin over 3000-3500RPM.
Fuel economy and drivability are my goals, with this car.
Preferrably a small turbo, that bolts right in,with little or no modification ?
I need to replace the down pipe anyway,so this wouldn't be a major concearn.
Maybe there are some improvements that can be made to the Garrett ?
Honestly-this is my FIRST turbo diesel- so I'm all ears and open to your suggestions.
Maybe someone has a good used turbo, that may suite this project?
Thanks,Mike
The T15 from the AAZ - a turbo that most people junk because of it's tiny dimensions - maybe just what you require

GT15/K03? that what your talking about? the tiny turbo?
a k14 will bolt to a vw turbo exhaust manifold. nice turbo for what you want. a k03 off of a tdi is also a good turbo for what you want. i don't know how well these will fit a fox tho.

true, the K14 is the smallest turbo to use a standard VW longitudinal manifold..
Transverse 1,6TD exhaust manifold will fit nicely in longitudal engine bay. It even came from factory in Audi 80 87=>
Hi Guys,
Thanks,for all your input !
Your thoughts and my research, come to the same conclusion-a K14 would be perfect.
Does anyone have in mind - a specific year and model VW,which came with a k14 that will bolt up to my 85 Quantum 1.6TD manifold?
It would be much easier finding the correct K14,with year, model and engine info.
The k14 turbos that I have seen pics of,don't have the same flange bolt pattern as my Garrett. ( 4 bolt flange-Not square-One side wider than the other)
I'm sure you have a term for it-

LOL
If anyone has a K14 that will fit and wants to sell it-Let me know.
Thanks agian !
Mike
