lopey idle, lots of gray smoke

1.6TD(from Quantum) in caddy, head resurfaced and valve job. Had trouble starting it, now runs idle rough and lots of gray smoke(don't have exhaust pipe on it yet so smokey under the hood. Set timing at .39 I think dial indicator mount sloppy. Your thoughts?

the rebuild is all bad the motor is trash..
hey i'm in VA too wanna sell?
haha j/k (or not) but yeah you got bad timin fo show fo show.. get it strung on out to the .95 and that smokin will clear up

My indicator is in inches .39 I believe is 1.05mm? Not sure how accurate the setting though mount sloppy. I'm thinking I should retard it a little?

I hope that 0.039in! If so, thats more like .99mm. Not really all that far off, but you could try bringing it down to .95mm to see if it helps (0.0374in).
Do you have the right adaptor for the timing gauge? I know ours came with different ones, but we also have one that reads in mm. It needs to be secure, otherwise you will never get your timing correct on the pump.

I'll look when i get in to the garage later, but ,yes .39 is pretty high. I would set it at around .35 or just retard it while running to see where it likes it best. Double check the belt timing also and make sure your timing advance is pushed in and is really set back by looking at the lever

If you haven't ran it 10 miles or more I wouldn't worry. It took me that long to burn the oil and get the air out from when I reassembled the engine. 1.00mm should be fine I would think retarding it would cause more smoke at idle. Does it clear up when reved? IIRC the spec is between .033 and .042" depending on engine

I would check the timing over, check to make sure ALL glowplugs are working, make sure you don't have air leaks.. They can cause a hell of a nightmare.
also is the pump a fresh rebuild? How many kms?? Older pumps like to be around .039 to 0.41. I have my NA times to 0.040 I believe.

83 TD pump, new seals front and rear, Idle better now(after I ran it around 10-15 min) But not alot of power, have to rev it up to move in first. Still alot of smoke even after running awhile. I'm going to check timing again

My motor smoked after being put back together with a used pump. The timing was set to spec, it ran sub-ok. While running the smoke would stop if I pulled the cold start valve. That suggested my timing was regarded. Eventually I just pushed the pump further to the motor, it ran better, the smoke went away.
