Hello all. this is my first post in the tdi section, because I just bought my first TDI. It's a 2000 beetle, and the engine is seized. I am looking at engine options, and would like to know how difficult it would be to swap in a 2l TDI. are the mounts the same? is the engine wiring the same? is it even possible?
thanks

like the new 2.0 16v TDIs?
LMFAO..
not even close to fitting without making everything custom..
good luck on that wiring..
the 1.9 TDI, and the 2.0 TDI are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT..

oh its easy, in fact it will bolt in! gearbox mates perfectly!
but wiring,
exhaust,
intake,
intercooler,
entire fuel system,
cluster,
immo system
ect.. are totally different.

so, the easy part is really easy, and the hard part is really hard?

Somebody needs to do it at some point! I'm sure there was a time when folks said the same thing about throwing that alh into mk1 or a bew into mk1 or even just an o2a in an mk1, now we do them all the time, well kinda anyway. so doing similar things to a mk4 just seems like a natural progression for folks with more money than i! Although i do think VW has changed its engineering making some more difficult. It used to be cross platform/generation swaps etc were a great success because of how vw originally engineered the stuff. I mean when you think that a drivetrain from an early 99 jetta gasser would be a retrofit bolt in(not counting wiring) to a 75 rabbit that is really cool!

ok, so I guess the 2l TDI is out of the question for me. thanks for the input. Next question, My goal is 160-180hp. What is the most cost effective way to achieve these numbers? (I'm open to engine swaps as long as I don't have to mess with rewiring)
Thanks

I would just replace the ALH with another ALH. It's a very tunable engine with lots of aftermarket support. However, you will need to invest a fair amount of time and money to get 160+ hp from the 90 hp ALH.
To get over 160 hp on an ALH, you will need the following: Stage 5 tune, vnt 17/22 or bigger turbo, bigger injectors, stronger clutch/solid flywheel, front mount intercooler, larger turbo-back exhaust, boost/egt gauges.
You should probably go to tdiclub to do research on each on these components.

sounds good, will do! Now, I have just one more question. What's the best way to pull the engine? out the bottom or pull the front end off? I have only ever pulled engines from mk1, 2 and 3's, and this beetle is quite different than any of those.
thanks
