Perplexing Turbo dilemma...

So my one of a kind IHI turbo that even Gpop shop hasn't heard of is leaking oil and I'm beginning to wonder if its too small for my engine, it spools instantly but once it hits about 11 to 12 pounds it kinda lays down all the way to 14 and continues like that all the way to the governer. so my issue now is to continue to invest time and money into trying to find a rebuilder to rebuild it or to just upgrade. then if thats the direction i should go, what turbo should i go with? i know that's a popular question around here but i i'm forced to ask it.
So i'm dealing with a hybrid 1.5 block and head with a 1.6 rotating assembly so i've got way to much compression so 15 psi is all i think i should go with, but besides that, arp studs, Giles td pump, 155 bar injectors.
A VNT would be sweet! but only if anyone on here has one for sale with a matching exhaust manifold, so availability would be the deciding factor on that.

most VW VNTs that we can get in this country, are integral manifolded units.. meaning that if you get the turbo, you get a manifold with it too, because its all one piece..
if i were you, i would upgrade to some sort of a more readily available turbo, rather than trying to source parts for some unobtanium..

I agree with you on that. and if i fix what i've got it still might not be ideal anyways. I'm down with the integral manifold, now only if i could find someone that wants to unload one

For everyones reference, the turbo in question is a motorcycle turbo. It is commonly found on racing BMW's and special models. It spools quickly on cars and for our apps it is underpowered, and will probably cap out around 2500 RPM, because the motorcycles definately make less pressure then our oil burners.

Well that would explain alot of things.. Thanks Macka finally i have some closure, and now know why most people haven't heard of that model turbo
So that leads me to the second part of my question... What should i replace it with? would a T3 be too big for what i'm trying to do? Or would a k14 be more suitable. Of course a VNT 15 would be ideal but that is as long as i could find one.

if you want low RPM spool, and not much max boost, the k14 is the way to go. or a VNT

Yep low rpm spool is what I'm going for, for sure! Since my max boost is limited the quicker I can get to my 14 to 15ish the better

Side note. Why a 1.6 rotating assembly in a 1.5 block/head. Is the stroke different? Is that why you say you have a lot of compression. What is your compression?

1.6 and 1.5 have the same bore, 1.5 has a shorter stroke, and i believe it also has a different wrist pin height

Well it was a mistake on my part. not knowing when i started the rebuild using a spare engine that was a 1.5l so it was bored for the oversized pistons and all the parts were cleaned i just decided to pull the crank and rods out of my engine that was in the car and stuck them in there. I've heard that the compression on a set up like this is around 25.5:1. So i wish i woulda known before i put all the effort into this set up cause i've kinda got all the bad aspects of a 1.5l and the added strain of a turbo. but whatever. it works
