so, basically any Fx trans will work for you, besides the FK and the like, out of GTIs.. you want a nice long ratio trans..
http://scirocco.org/gears/any of the trannies from the first 3 lines would be a direct swap. some mk2 trannies will even swap in without too much work.

Did you just get the 83? Is it all factory? What did you pay? Can you send me/post pix?
Just trying to learn more about these babies as I recently acquired one and was promptly told they are super rare, thanks!

So FX, will work i have no clue about transmissions and the ratio things. I just need to find one with a taller 5th or the same as the trans i got now.
I dont want to risk putting a trans in there and then going on the highway at 3500 RPM 70 MPH lol

Yes 83 Code CY its all factory without any rust. I paid $375 for it and drove it 3000Miles with out doing anything to it! Cant believe that.
I just decided to rebuild it. just for the hell of it. But rings were kinda bad. used oil. Yes they are super rare.
My build thread:

no dude.. there is no FX code trannies.. i said Fx (replace X with proper letter of trans code) there are F series trannies, (FF, FN, FJ, FH, FO) any of those are mk1 trannies with long gears..
or you could find an ACH/ACN out of a mk2 car, wont be too much hassle to swap it in..

LKQ in Durham has 5 mk2's on hand right now.
That was report from Wolfsburged on Sunday.
All gassers - and think all had engine/trans.
I haven't been to GSO U-Pull recently - but need to go soon and take inventory.
You'll want 85 or 86 only - if from mk2.
And double check for the multi-provision mounts on those.
NCDubs.org can probably help you out too.

There's other options too, I had a 7A in a mk 1 gas jetta (factory installed trans), nice gearing for a diesel, .71 overdrive.

7A is the best transmission for that car. only found in 84 Jetta and Rabbit diesel and 1.7 gas cars. No Sciroccos, GTI, GLI or convertible models, they have close ratio. Otherwise get an FN or FF

So does the 7A bolt up without any mods? There only found in 84 gassers? no anyother gassers? I know where some MK1 gassers are

you can use any 5 spd. transmission from any 80 to 98 golf jetta rabbit or pickup as long as it has a cable clutch. They're called 020 transmissions by VW cause that's what any part number for the unit starts with - 020. Some use different clutch discs but otherwise they all interchange. For your application though the 7A is probably the best because of the gear ratios VW put in that unit.
if I were you I would not get a gasser trans your car will be numb off the line. Make sure the trans you get has a 3.89 or 3.94 final drive ratio.

unless you got a turbo car, then a 3.67 final drive is SWEET!
around the city, a close ratio with 3.67's rocks. on the freeway, a long ratio with 3.67s rocks..
its all about personal preference, i like the 3.67 gears myself, but i do alot of driving at 55 or more mph..
