I just bought an 82 diesel 4 door Rabbit. It has the shoulder belts in front and no lap belt. There is a hole in the door post but it is obvioulsy hidden with the interior trim. My question is, would this be threaded to accept a shoulder belt? Would a shoulder/lap belt bolt right in?
Also, the rear seat only has lap belts. Is there a way to put in shoulder belts there also? I have two kids still in booster seats so they need them.
Thanks
You should be able to put in the lap (b-pillar) belts up front. If you remove the lower on either the B-pillar or the rear door panels on a coupe, you should see the lower bolt hole. You'll obviously need the recivers to bol to the bottom of the seats.
In the rear, there really was no option. There are holes back there, but you'll probably have to get some rear belts from a MK2 to make it work. Or, some aftermarket option. I've never seen a MK1 with rear shoulder belts in my life. Maybe on a MK1 Jetta? I know some Golfs in Europe had them, but I've never seen them in the USA.
i just did this swap on my mk1, u can use mk2 front belts as well, but make sure you get all the hardware and the receiver, since u have a 4 door i'd get stuff from a 4 door, just in case. as far as rear shoulder belts go, i am pretty sure there is a threaded hole in the c pillar for them, i don't know what will tho since i never saw a rabbit with rear should belts, how ever i am almost certain that all the euro cars had rear shoulder belts, i know i have seen them in mk1 jettas, mk1 jettas even have a slot in the rear shelf where the belt would go through, euro jettas even had a center seat belt.
lol, you guys are talking about putting better seat belts in your cars.. usually, if i dont fold my seat belts under the seats, i just take them out.. (the rears)
Excellent help guys, I think I have enough info to get going on this. I found a set of front shoulder belts today that will work. I will be looking for the rears while I get these installed.

My rabbit has the c pillar mount but not the reel mount, you could maybe make one or loot one from probably any vw.
My '92 euro golf never had any rear belts. The c pillar anchors, the slot in the rear shelf and the lower mount by the seat all have factory looking plugs/covers.
